Reflection #1 (Research Paper)
1. Are you satisfied with your topic, driving question, and thesis statement? Elaborate. State
you topic, driving question, and thesis statement.
Yes, because I feel that they guild me towards the places that I want to go. Without these key
items, it would have been difficult to keep up with my paper and my product.
Topic – Antibiotics: Positive VS Negative Effects
Driving Question - Are antibiotics more harmful than helpful and what can we, as people, do to
prevent bacteria from becoming resistant to them?
Thesis Statement - Antibiotics are more harmful than helpful since they could cause bacteria to
become resistant which cause future problems such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria and
bioterrorism attacks; ways to help prevent these future health problems include: taking all the
prescribed doses of the medication, not stockpiling the medication, and following all the
instructions that come with the antibiotic medication
2. Are you on target with the paper timeline? If yes, what processes have you used to keep
you on track? If not, what are your plans for catching up?
Yes. I did my best to go ahead and get ahead of the timeline, that way if I skipped something or
if I just got behind, I had a buffer to help me out.
3. Discuss some of your most valuable sources.
The most valuable source that I had was the internet, and in particular .edu sites. They were able
to give me cut-and-dry information that I could easily use in my paper. Scientific articles were
important also. Without some of those, I would not have obtained the information I needed to be
able to search for more accurate sources that were more specific to what I was looking for..
4. In general, what are some of your celebrations? What are some of your struggles?
I was very happy when my paper was deemed proficient. I was finally done with the work part
of the NCGP, and then I could do something more fun and productive. One of my struggles was
that it was painstakingly difficult to find the exact information I needed to complete my paper.
Also, when I finished my paper, I realized I had to decide what to do with my product, which
was a complex situation in itself.
Reflection #2 (Product)
1. What is the connection between your product and research paper?
For part of my product I created a fundraiser, which is going to ECU’s Medical and Health
Science Foundation. This related to my research paper because ECU’s Medical and Health
Science Foundation because they support education and research in the medical and health
science field.
I also made a powerpoint and taught a class about the seriousness of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
2. Describe your product.
I made cake pops to sell for my fund raiser. I sold them for 50 cents each, which was enough to
make a total profit of approximately 100 dollars, which I am donating to ECU’s Medical and
Health Science Foundation.
I created a powerpoint that I had presented to four periods of the biology class at Craven Early
College. I talked about general facts of antibiotics, how bacteria become resistant, and ways to
prevent antibiotic-resistance.
3. Has the form or nature of your product changed since you began? Elaborate on your yes or no
answer.
No, it hasn’t changed since I came up with the fund raiser and teaching the classes. I was very
limited with what I could do with my product, so I just had to stick with it.
4. Do you have a mentor? If yes, describe your working relationship. If no, would having a
mentor be helpful in completing your product?
No, but a mentor would have made my paper and product much easier. A mentor would have
given me advice and advanced knowledge of this particular subject, which would have been very
helpful with evaluating ways to do my product. A mentor would have helped shine a light on a
path to educating the public about effects of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
5. Has working on your product been a positive experience? Elaborate on your yes or no answer.
Yes, it has. It made me realize that there are many different things that the average person
doesn’t know, and I feel that it is necessary for them to know certain things like how antibiotics
are slowly but surely becoming less effective.
6. What has worked well for you? What would change?
My teaching experience worked out very well for me. I thought I would be more nervous than I
was going in front of the classroom and teaching students about antibiotics and what should be
changed around that matter. I would change anything, because I think that I did a great job with
my product.
