Wilton Manors Elementary During 'Literacy Week' at Wilton Manors all classes will begin a focus on reading, discussing, and then creating an 'information text' with text dependent questions, for an audience of their peers. We thought this would be a great way to help students learn more about informational texts from the inside out. Although the project will begin during 'Literacy Week' it will no doubt extend beyond that time frame. We will be culminating our current units of Inquiry at each grade level during the next 2 weeks. Throughout the units many non-fiction texts have been read and dissected as teachers and students search for knowledge about their topics. On day one, teachers will facilitate group discussions around the key information learned through read aloud as well as independent study. Students will refer to their notes and back to the texts used throughout the unit thus far. Classes will collect key facts and information and create a chart for reference later in the week. Million Minute Marathon All classes will read for 30 minutes. School- wide Writing Project: students will write about their favorite story/book. On day two, classes will refer back to the resources they used during the unit for information, with special attention to text format and features. They will discuss the text features and how they help the reader process the information in the text. This will be the beginning of a discussion about the most effective way to present the information in a text format. On day three, classes will continue their discussions by referring to the chart created on day one. Each group will have to consider the type of information they have to present and determine the best format to use to get that information across to their audience. The goal here is to create a class text that will include the key facts and details they want to share about their topic in an 'informational text' of their own creation. Individuals and groups will be assigned portions of the text to write and illustrate. Upon completion this text will be shared with another grade level. A student from each grade level will introduce their favorite book on the morning news each day. All classes will stop and read for 15 minutes each day. Guest reader will read a story in the afternoon on the news. The Guest readers will dress up like the major character in the book. Winston Park Elementary Activity 9: Story Writing What to do: Encourage beginning and developing writers to keep journals and write stories. Ask questions that will help children organize the stories, and respond to their questions about letters and spelling. Suggest they share the activity with a smaller brother, sister, or friend. Teacher Read Aloud: Teachers will read excerpts from their favorite books to their students from 3:00 - 3:15pm. Students will be encouraged to discuss what was read. Activity 4: Poetry in motion What to do: Suggest acting out a verse, a stanza, or the entire poem. Ask your child to make a face the way the character in the poem is feeling. Remember that facial expressions bring emotion into the performer's voice. School-Wide Silent Sustained Reading (SSR): From 10:00am - 10:15am all students will read one of their favorite books for 15 minutes in whatever class they are in a school-wide silent sustained reading marathon. Then students will be allowed to discuss those books with their class from 10:15am 10:30am. On day four, classes will continue the process of creating their text individually and in groups, working from their plan and including the appropriate text features (table of contents, labels, graphs, pictures with captions, glossary, etc.) to deliver their information in the most effective way. The activities described above will clearly stretch beyond Literacy Week as classes share the books they have created and the information within. Classes will have students write about their favorite story or book and then share them with other classes. Students will be able to dress up like the characters and share their stories or books as an Early Release Day activity.
