Saint Peter Boys Golf Scope and Sequence (Grades 7-12) Indoor Practices Purpose: to review golf rules, golf swing and etiquette; warm up the golf swing and golf muscles How We Will Do This: Review Rules -golfers will take 3 rules tests within the first week of practice -golfers passing these tests (90%) will be exempt from viewing the rules videos, but will have to make corrections -golfers not receiving a passing score on these tests, will watch the rules videos and correct the rules on their tests -rules tests and/or videos must be completed before competing in a meet/tournament Work on Fundamentals of Game -grip (overlap, interlocking, or two-hand – first two preferable) -proper stance (feet shoulder-width apart, slight bend at the waist, knees bent) -proper arm position (elbows, wrist) Areas of the Game and Fundamentals of the Shots -putting: slow, straight back and through – finish with putter pointing to hole, narrower stance (carpet simulation) -chipping: backswing determined by distance, follow through to target, use variety of clubs depending on lie (targets/hula hoops, nets) (ex. 100 yards out – pitching wedge, 50 yards out – sand wedge, fringe – 8 iron with a “putting” swing) -full swing: position of arms and feet, placement of ball in stance, transfer of weight nets **Each golfer has his/her own unique swing. What works for one golfer will not always work for another, however, reviewing the basic fundamentals can help each golfer find a swing that is effective and meets his/her individual needs. Outdoor Practice Purpose: to continue working on same skills as indoors and using them in game like scenarios How We Will Do This: Review of Rules -use the course to give scenarios and show various rules and procedures -discuss rules that come up during practice rounds and competition Work on the Fundamentals of the Game -Putting Green: -work on finding the stroke used at various distances, -reading the greens (left and right break, slope, uphill, downhill) -bump and run (short irons vs. pitching/sand wedge) DRILLS: *1-2-3 putter lengths (make 15, 10, 5) *2-4-6 putter lengths (make 10, 5, 3) *putt to a tee (feel of green vs. making putt) *Stop Putt (importance of follow through) *Eyes Closed Test (proper stroke/line) *Fringe Putting *Chip and 1 putt game (partner up and each golfer gets 1 chip and 1 putt, if they make this they get a point. Play to 10 or whatever you have time for) -Chipping/Sand -identifying length of swing based on distance -positioning of club (open to lift, closed to roll) -stance, positioning of ball (back in stance to bump and run, forward in stance to loft more) -location (do you want to land on green or roll to pin) DRILLS: *Target Practice *No-Wrist Chipping Drill *Groove Your Chipping Stroke -Range -pre-shot routines (follow same routine each shot) -identify distances for each club (use range) -hitting for location (pick post to fly over or chip to) -practice “trouble” clubs -club selection (if buried in rough, use an iron – in trees, find safest way out to fairway) DRILLS: *Target Practice *Preset Back Swing Drill *Consistent Swing *Easy Driver Drill *Hip Turn Drill *Play 9 holes or 18 holes as if you were on course.
