Example:
In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee,” he uses the literary element of
imagery. One way he uses this element is in the line “For the moon never beams, without
bringing me dreams of the beautiful Annabel Lee.” This shows imagery because imagery
is language that appeals to the senses. This appeals to the sense of sight because his
words bring to mind a picture of moonbeams in an evening sky and a man dreaming of
his lost love. A second way he uses the element of imagery is in the line “And the stars
never rise but I feel the bright eyes of my beautiful Annabel Lee.” This second line also
shows imagery because it appeals to the senses. It appeals to the senses of sight and
touch. He is both seeing the stars and her eyes at the same time, and he is also feeling her
presence and her eyes when he sees the stars.
