President’s Message
Here we are in April with only a few months of school left,
where does the time go?
Congratulations to our 1st place Reflections winners at
Torrance Council: Sarah Park, Photography; Daisy Jean Yi,
Visual Arts; and Kevin Barr, Music. They were honored at the
Torrance Council of PTA’s February meeting. Thank you to all
who participated. Continued congratulations to Kevin Barr
whose work went on to California State PTA. Good luck, Kevin!
I’d like to thank the parents that came out to help at the annual
College Fair at North High. Students had a chance to talk with
many different college representatives and sit in on a variety of
different seminars at this successful event. Next year West
High will be hosting the College Fair so make plans to attend.
Join us for the PTSA Association meeting and Parent
Education Night featuring “Street Smarts 101” on Wednesday,
April 18 at 6:45 pm in the Pavilion. Parents are encouraged to
bring their high school students to hear a panel of experts
address issues facing our students. It is a night not to miss, so
mark your calendars.
On May 2, 2007, Superintendent Dr. Mannon will be visiting our
campus to talk to parents about a potential upcoming bond.
The meeting will take place at 5:00 pm in the Administrators’
Conference Room in the Office. Please plan on attending this
short and informative meeting regarding the bond to help
improve our schools.
As the school year nears the end, the PTSA is looking for
board members. If you are interested in chairing a position or
helping out please contact me at the.pivs@gte.net for more
information. We can never have too many volunteers.
Again, I’d like to thank everyone for being such a supportive
community here at West. It is just great to see all of the people
that come out to help make West the Best…thank you!
Until next time, GO WEST!

Principal’s Message
Our WASC Accreditation
visit
was
extremely
successful. Under the
outstanding leadership of
our
site
coordinator,
Ms. Katie Griffith, West
High
received
many
accolades, including:
STAR testing is also rapidly approaching
(testing will be on May 16, 17, 18, 21 and 22).
Please encourage your students to do their
best on these assessments, as we desire to
move our API beyond the current 814. We
are shooting for our 4th straight year of strong
improvement on these tests and I know our
students will rise to the challenge.


Highly qualified teachers
A strong curriculum based on state
standards
A variety of learning experiences for
students
Active parent and student involvement
School culture characterized by trust,
professionalism and continuous school
improvement
The activity calendar for the rest of the year is
very busy as usual. Please make an effort to
come to some of the events we have
scheduled in the coming months including
performances and athletic contests. To see
our monthly activities calendar, go to
www.whs.tusd.org and click on What’s
Happening. Our web site, updated daily, is
also full of other useful information.
We will not find out our term of accreditation
until June but the experience as a whole will
allow us to now focus on our action plan and
continue to improve the experience for
everyone at West High.
I told the students at our last rally how proud I
am to serve as principal at West High.
Everywhere I go in the community, I hear
such great things about our school. From
CSF students tutoring elementary students to
the rich history of high academic
achievement, West continues to represent
this community in a positive manner. I am
continuously impressed by our students,
teachers, staff, parents and administrators,
and I am looking forward to a great
conclusion to another year of outstanding
accomplishments.



Refocusing on the current activities going on
at West, I cannot believe that we are already
approaching the final quarter of the year.
Parents of seniors are beginning to make
post-secondary plans and others are deciding
on next year’s classes. With scheduling
taking place, it is essential that parents and
students are provided with all of the
information needed to make appropriate
decisions about courses West offers. Please
be sure to communicate with the teachers
and counselors if you have questions about
what courses your student should take next
year.

2006 – 2007 PTSA Reflections Results
Theme: “My Favorite Place”
A big thank you and congratulations to all the students who took the time to share their creative
talents in this year’s National PTA Reflections Contest. 37 entries were submitted by students, a
significant increase over the 5 submitted last year. Entries were received in 4 of the 6 categories
offered this year: Visual Arts, Literature, Music Composition, and Photography. No entries were
received in the 2 new categories: Dance Choreography and Film/Video Production.
Thank you to our “expert” judges who had the very difficult task of choosing the top winners from
among the exceptional entries. Visual Arts: Yolanda Franklin, Ruth Borges, and Tracy Nelesen;
Literature: Pamela Brown, Sara Brown, and Kathy Miglin; Music Composition: Mark Portis;
Photography: Jon Crowe.
The judges selected the top 3 winners in each category. The four 1 st place winners all went on to
compete at the Torrance Council level where Daisy Yi (Visual Arts), Kevin Barr (Music
Composition), and Sarah Park (Photography) took 1st place and Grace Wu (Literature) took 2nd
place. A special congratulation goes to Kevin Barr who went on to win 1st place at the 33rd
District level and has gone on to compete at state!
Congratulations to all the participants, they are all winners and are great examples of how talented
our West High students really are! Keep up the great work!

Senior Class News
June 20th will be here before we know it. All seniors are encouraged to
attend the amazing graduation celebration of Grad Night (see ticket
information below.) Following graduation, the seniors come to the school
around 9pm to board buses to a secret, secured, and exclusive location with unlimited fun, games,
prizes, food, shows, and entertainment. The party continues until the sun comes up and we return
to school around 6 or 7am. This is a once in a lifetime event and we hope all seniors will plan to
attend.
Candy Sales
The Good News is that there are many
students who have taken advantage of this
great opportunity to sell candy to defer the
cost of Grad Night. Throughout April, seniors
can come to the “Candy Table” outside the
Student Activities office every Tuesday and
find out how to earn their way to Grad Night.
The Bad News is that all candy money must
be turned in by May to get your ticket as well
as your diploma. Anyone with outstanding
money should turn the money in as soon as
possible. Many thanks to Barbara Slowey for
chairing this important committee this year.
Swap Meet
The Grad Night Committee will be hosting the
Swap Meet on March 24th, April 28th, and May
26th in the Student Parking Lot from 7am –
2pm. Stop by to shop, or, for $10 you can
have a large spot to set up your own “store.”
We also have a snack bar to purchase
breakfast and lunch items. Questions and
appreciation go to Teri Blomgren at 310-9014827.
No Show Tea
It is not too late
to send in your
donation for the
No Show tea!
Many thanks to
the
following
families for their
generous
participation in
our Tea Party:
Alvarez, Ayotte, Ayres, Blank, Chang,
Chavez, Chou, Chung, Cooper, Cullen,
Curameng, Denner, Eich, Fischer, Fleming,
Go, Heflinger, Ikemoto, Intwala, Ito, Jones,

Smiley, Spadafino, Su’a, Tafoya, TheodoreTasich, Ton, Torres, Toti, Wang, Watson,
Wilbanks, Yamasaki, and Yukutake.
Thank you so very much for your
commitment to West High. We could not
achieve our success without your support.
Grad Night Tickets
Tickets will go on sale in May for $135, less if
you sold any candy. We will also be sending
out reimbursement checks if you have sold
candy and purchased a presale ticket.

Career Technical Education
Relay for Life, May 5 & 6
Linh Troung represented The West High
Chapter of FHA-HERO at the regional level of
the Competitive Recognition Events on
Saturday, February 24, 2007. He placed
fourth in Fashion Design.
This year’s
competition required three designs for
uniforms to represent the USA at the opening
ceremonies for the Beijing Summer Olympics.
Congratulations, Linh!
South High School will host
the 5th annual American
Cancer Society Torrance
Relay for Life on May 5 and
6.
Relay for Life is a
community gathering where
everyone can participate in
the fight against cancer. Teams of people will
camp out on the football field as team
members take turns walking around the track.
It’s a giant 24-hour party for a good cause.
FHA-HERO is a careertechnical
student
organization for students
in or previously in home
economics careers and
technology
classes.
Through
leadership
activities
and
competitions, students gain skills for work in
eight different career opportunities: Child
Development and Education, Food Science,
Dietetics and Nutrition, Consumer Services,
Consumer and Family Studies, Family and
Human Services, Fashion Design and
Merchandising, Food Service and Hospitality,
Tourism, and Interior Design. West High FHA
sponsors are teachers Holly Hall and Laurie
Paolozzi.
Torrance Relay for Life brings people
together to raise money in support of the
American Cancer Society’s mission to help
prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish
suffering from cancer through research,
education, advocacy and service.
You can get involved by joining a team,
sponsoring a team, starting your own team,
supporting a student team, and/or joining us
as our honorary guest during the special
opening ceremony if you are a cancer
survivor.
For more details about the American Cancer
Society and Relay for Life, log onto the
American Cancer Society’s website at
www.cancer.org.
To sign up for or donate to West High’s team,
contact Pam Metz at 310-533-4299 x 7692.
Star Testing
All students in grades 9-11 will take California Standards Tests (STAR) on
May 16, 17, 18, 21 and 22 in the morning. A detailed schedule will be
posted on the West High website. Please avoid scheduling appointments
during STAR testing so your child doesn't have to be pulled from regular
classes to make up any tests. The STAR test results help determine West
High's Academic Performance Index (API) in which we are ranked with all
high schools throughout California. We are very proud of our students'
performance on STAR tests and look forward to continued success.

INFORMATION FOR SENIORS:
REMINDER TO SENIORS
Please remind your seniors of the importance
of keeping up their grades. Remind them that
acceptance offers to colleges and universities
are provisional and contingent upon students
completing in good standing the work
indicated as planned for the Spring of Senior
year. Work not completed, or completed with
less than satisfactory grades, can result in
revocation of admission.
Cal State and UC Campuses Still
Accepting Applications
Some California State University and UC
campuses are still accepting applications for
Fall 2007 admission. For more information
visit
www.csumentor.edu
and/or
www.universityofcalifornia.edu.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Many companies and organizations send us
information regarding available scholarships.
Please encourage your seniors to come to
the Counseling Office to review the
scholarship binder or visit the West High
website (under Counselor’s Corner section).
Check the binder or website often as new
scholarships are added regularly.
COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES AND
SCHOLARSHIPS EARNED
Seniors are reminded to notify the
Counseling Office of all college acceptances
and scholarships that they receive. Since
universities rarely inform high schools when
they have accepted students, students can
help
us maintain records
of
their
accomplishments by bringing in their
acceptance letters so they can be
photocopied. Scholarship recipients will be
recognized at the Awards Ceremony in June.

SCROC: Career Technical Education
The Southern California Regional Occupational
Center, or SCROC, provides career technical education
to high school students and adults in the South Bay.
The hallmark of their program is that they provide
hands-on practical experience and education in all of
their courses.
Changing Focus
Most people view SCROC as a place for students to go
who are not college bound. Pamela Lawrence, the
Career Guidance Specialist for all the Torrance high
schools, says this perception is outdated. “Vocational
Education” has evolved into “Career and Technical
Education,” recognizing that technical skills are
increasingly requiring more academic content. She has
many stories of students who are more motivated to
continue with their education once they have taken
SCROC classes because they see the value and
relevance of additional schooling to attain their desired
profession.
Program Highlights
Many introductory courses are taught right on the high
school campuses, with more advanced courses being
offered at SCROC’s main campus in Torrance or at
their satellite facilities in Manhattan Beach or Rancho
Palos Verdes.
These courses are taught in an environment which
simulates the actual work site. For instance, when you
walk into any health science and medical technology
course, you feel as though you just entered a doctor’s
office or hospital room; they have all the latest medical
equipment and even cabinets full of pseudo patient
medical files.
One of their buildings recently
completed a $7 million new technology center to
modernize their computer and learning centers.
About 60% of the overall SCROC student body is high
schoolers. This percentage will change dramatically in
the upcoming years as they need to have 90%

enrollment from this demographic by 2009 in order to
continue to receive state funding due to the passing of
the Career Technical Education Bill.
By law, Regional Occupation Centers and Programs
must offer courses that meet the current labor market
demand.
They work with public agencies,
businesses, and industry to design and provide
programs that will meet local needs for skilled
workers. With their input, course content is updated
annually to ensure the curriculum stays current with
industry demands.
Course offerings are also developed as other needs of
the community change. For instance, after 9/11, the
necessity for “Emergency First Responders” (EMT)
was identified. SCROC received special state funding
in this area and has since offered two courses in EMT.
Also, recognizing the needs of college-bound students,
certain classes are now designated as qualifying for
“UC a-g” subject credit.
SCROC has affiliation agreements with hundreds of
business and industry partners in the South Bay who
accept students as interns in all their curriculum areas.
Student typically attend class one day a week at a
SCROC site and then get this valuable on-the-job
training at one of the partner work sites the other days.
They also have an extensive career center where
numerous local job postings are maintained.
Advantages of SCROC Courses
 Earn high school graduation credits
 Explore career & college options
 Master employment skills
 Receive job placement assistance
 Apply and reinforce academics
 Earn certificates of completion.
Registration Information
Beginning in their sophomore year, students can
register through their home school counseling office or
Career Guidance Specialist Pamela Lawrence and
receive priority through pre-registration for classes that
meet from 1:00-3:30 and 3:30-6:30 pm. Registration
for spring semester classes is available now.
High school students do not pay any fees, unlike adults
who enroll in the same classes. Summer session is also
held on their campuses.

Junior Class News
Grad Night 2008 will be here before you know it! Grad Night is a fun, safe, all-night party for our
graduating seniors. There is plenty of food, drinks and snacks and lots of activities for the kids to
do. The approximate cost per student is $150 but we never charge the students full price. We
need chair people to help with various activities to raise money to help defray the students’ cost for
this memorable event. Please contact Shelly Karsh at 310-543-0463 or mkarsh@aol.com; or Cheri
Childers at 310-542-4794 or kinders3@verizon.net, if you can volunteer to coordinate or help with
any of the following, or if you have any other ideas for fundraising.
Senior Sweatshirts
We send out order forms in the senior
registration packet. We order sweatshirts in
September and November and distribute
them in October and December.
Restaurant Nights
We contact local restaurants (Bonello's, Pat &
Oscar's, Souplantation, etc.), book a night,
print and distribute flyers, and collect a check.
We try to do 3 or 4 restaurant nights.
Swap Meet
Six times a year, on the 4th Saturday of the
month we host the Swap Meet in the West
High parking lot. Set up starts about 6:30AM
and we usually close by 1:30 PM. We set up
a food booth with coffee, donuts, hot dogs,
etc., for sale. We also collect $10 from each
vendor for their spot. We ask for parent
volunteers to help at the food booth and/or
donate the food.
Additional Fundraisers in place of Candy
Sales
In the past seniors were able to sell Helen
Grace chocolate bars to pay for or defray the
cost of their own ticket. However, due to the
state’s new Wellness Policy we may no
longer sell candy bars on campus. Some
possible options are:
No Show Tea Party
We send out an invitation to all West High
families inviting them to a tea party that they
DO NOT attend. However, we ask them to
send a donation to help Grad Night. This
invitation goes home in the February PTSA
newsletter. Volunteers can do this work at
home.
Donation Letter/Raffle Prizes
In January we send letters to local
businesses asking for donations of goods,
services, or money for raffle prizes at Grad
Night. Once the donations are received, we
send a thank you letter. We put out
containers at Grad Night so the seniors can
deposit their raffle tickets.
 Frozen Pizza/Cookie Dough
We usually send the order form home in the
senior registration packet and ask for it back
by the end of September. The products are
delivered a few weeks later. The profit will go
toward the cost of the student’s own ticket.
 Car Wash Coupons
Seniors could sell car wash coupons and the
profit on each coupon would be credited to
their Grad Night ticket.
 Daily Breeze
It is possible that seniors will be able to sell
subscriptions and receive credit towards their
Grad Night ticket. Currently the Daily Breeze
is in the process of being sold so we are not
sure if the subscription fundraiser will be
available.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Practice the three R's: first
reduce how much you use,
then reuse what you can,
and then recycle the rest.
Then, dispose of what's
left
in
the
most
environmentally
friendly
way. Read the tips below
and
explore
the
Consumer's Handbook for Reducing Solid Waste
(www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/reduce/catbook)
Reduce:




Buy permanent items instead of disposables.
Buy and use only what you need.
Buy products with less packaging.
Buy products that use less toxic chemicals.
Reuse:










Repair items as much as possible.
Use durable coffee mugs.
Use cloth napkins or towels.
Clean out juice bottles and use them for
water.
Use empty jars to hold leftover food.
Reuse boxes.
Purchase refillable pens and pencils.
Participate in a paint collection and reuse
program. For information on handling
household solid waste, visit
www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/citizens.htm.
Donate extras to people you know or to
charity instead of throwing them away.
Reuse grocery bags as trash bags.
Recycle:
The City of Torrance has a curbside recycling
service. The following items can be recycled in
this program:
Newspaper, Cardboard and Mixed Paper
Catalogues, magazines with staples, glossy
paper, junk mail, computer paper, juice boxes,
pizza and bakery boxes, corrugated cardboard as
well as thinner cardboard like cereal and cracker
boxes are included. Do not include paper cups or
16
plates, napkins, tissue paper, fast food wrapping
or shredded paper.
Aluminum, Tin and Metal Cans
Cans from drinks, soup, pet food and vegetables
as well as empty aerosol cans are included.
Clean aluminum foil and trays and wire hangers
can also be recycled. Do not include scrap metals
from plumbing or construction materials.
Plastic Containers
Only plastic bottles, bags or containers with a
number 1 through 7 on the bottom can be
recycled. Examples include soda bottles, milk
jugs, shampoo bottles and butter tubs. Large
styrofoam pieces can be included too. Do not
include small styrofoam pieces (called popcorn or
peanuts), or any bottle, bag or container without a
number.
Glass Bottles and Jars
Glass bottles and jars of any color can be
recycled. Do not include glass dishes, light bulbs
or window glass.
Other curbside recycling tips:
Please rinse out containers, but be sure all liquids
are drained from containers before placing in
recycling bins.
Labels can be left on the containers. Lids can be
recycled in the bin, but please take them off the
containers. Flatten cardboard boxes and cut
them to fit into the recycling container. Per City
Ordinance, recycling (and refuse) containers must
be taken to the curb or collection area no sooner
than 12 hours prior to collection, and then
removed from the curb or collection area no later
than 12 hours after collection.
Place the
recycling container at least 3 feet away from your
refuse container.
Residents who want to cash in their plastic and
glass bottles and metal cans that have CRV
(California Redemption Value) can go to
www.bottlesandcans.com to find a redemption
center.
