GAULEY BRIDGE ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2015

“WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!”

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

As principal of Gauley Bridge Elementary School, I want to welcome each student, parent, guardian and staff member back to school for our 2015-2016 school year. We are eager to work with you and your children. More specifically, we want to work more with our parents. We have a huge challenge facing all of us in trying to educate our children.

Being in education for 20 plus years, I know how important it is for parents to be involved. Parent involvement can mean the difference in a student succeeding or dropping out of school. I beg all of you.

Please get involved in your child’s education. Help us to maintain the integrity of our school and the academic success that each of our children can achieve. Get to know us and work with us to create a good positive relationship with your child’s teachers and staff. My door is always open. I will listen to you and if possible, do all I can to help you when it comes to helping your child. I will do my best to help each and every one of my students.

In the next few days, we will be sending information home by your child. Please read the information. If it requires a signature, please sign and return to school as soon as possible. The materials we send home are very important to you, your child and our school.

I want to close by saying to all of you. This is your school. It is going to take all of us working together in a positive way to make it successful. I believe I have a wonderful, hard working staff. They, as I, will do all that we can to educate your children. We all will do everything to make this a successful year for you and your child.

The Importance of School Attendance

Research has proven that there is a hi gh corre l at i on between school attendance and academ i c performance and success, wh il e absence from school i s often the greatest single cause of poor performance and achievement .

Why is it so Important to attend every day?

 Learn i ng is a prog r essive activ i ty ; each day ' s lessons bu i ld upon those of the previous day(s) .

 Reading the material and completing work independently does not compensate for the loss of insight gained during class discussion or the loss of competency acquired through explanation or supervised dr il l .

 Many classes use lectures, discussions , demonstrations, experiments and participation as part of the daily learning activities , and these cannot be made up by those who are absent , tardy or skipping school.

 Regular student participation in da i ly classroom act i v i ties plays a significant role in a student ' s school success .

Are there other benefits to my child?

 Students with good attendance records generally achieve higher grades and enjoy school more.

 Having a good education will help to give your child the best possible start in life .

 Regular school attendance (being on time and no skipping) patterns encourage the development of other respons i ble patterns of behavior.

 Students who develop an "on the job" attitude toward school will be more desirable to future employers .

What are the risks of frequent absences?

 A child who does not attend school regu l arly, tardy often, or skips school frequently will be unlikely to keep up with the work .

 The more students miss school for any reason, the lower their grades; the lower their grades, the less they want to stay in school; the l ess they want to stay i n school, the more likely they will drop out of school or start skipping more .

 Students who miss school are more likely to be at-risk for anti-social or criminal behavior .

What can parents do to help?

 Parents must model the value of educat i on , including the importance of regular attendance.

 Make sure that your child goes to school regularly and arrives on time you will establish a good habit that will carry through life.

 If your child starts missing school, tardy or skips school, work with the school to put things right .

Make sure your child understands that you do not approve of him/her missing and/or skipping school .

 If your child is ill or must miss school for some other reason, contact the school immediately. If you ask for homework, make sure your child completes it .

At Gauley Bridge Elementary, we will work with you in accordance with our County Attendance Policy and our Student Code of Conduct to help you address attendance (tardy and skipping) issues. However, we do have consequences that we have established to try to deal with skipping and attendance. They are as follows:

SKIPPING POLICY

If a student would skip school for any reason, parents will be notified as soon as it has been established that your child has skipped school. Your child will meet with the principal to try to determine why he or she skipped school. This determination will allow us to determine the necessary steps in how to better help your child. He or she could also be given as much as 3 days in Lunch Detention. Skipping could also make him or her ineligible for the school’s PBS Incentive Awards.

TARDY POLICY

A student can receive two tardy per six weeks without penalty. The third tardy will result in 1 day of lunch detention. Our Secretary and our teachers will monitor tardies daily. Teachers will call or write parents upon the third tardy each semester. When tardies become a problem, more than 3 a semester, teachers will report to principal who will, in turn, set up a meeting with parents to discuss these tardies. After 5 tardies, a

SAT Team meeting will be conducted.

SIGN OUT POLICY

For the sole purpose of protecting your child and in order to provide a safe secure environment in our school, we ask that the following procedures be followed when signing your child out of school before the school day is or has been completed:

1.

In order to sign your child out of school, you must be the parent or legal guardian and your name must be on your child’s Information Card.

2.

Only the person or persons authorized by you and whose names are on your child’s

Information Card, will be allowed to sign your child out of school. In some cases, we may ask to see your photo ID.

3.

There will be a sign out sheet at the secretary’s desk that must be signed with your child’s name, the date, the time you sign the child out, and the signature of the person signing the child out.

4.

We will not accept phone calls or written notes directing us to allow someone not on your child’s Information Card to sign your child out of school. If there is someone you want to sign your child out of school, please make sure their name is on your child’s Information Card. The only thing we will accept will be death in the immediate family or serious family emergencies.

5.

Please help us to provide protection and a safe secure environment for your child, our staff, and all our children by following this policy.

NCLB: Parent's Right to Know Qualifications of

Child's Teachers

Did you know you have a right to know the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals? Did you know that your school district must notify you of your right to request information about the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals?

At the beginning of the school year, the school district must notify parents of all children who attend Title I schools of their right to request information about the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals, including:

(1) Whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;

(2) Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived.

(3) The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.

(4) Whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.

Qualifications of Substitute Teachers

Is your child being taught by a substitute teacher? If your child has been taught by a teacher who is not highly qualified for 4 consecutive weeks, your school district must notify you of this fact. This requirement applies to substitute teachers, many of whom do not meet "highly qualified" requirements. [Source: NCLB, Title I, Section

1111(h)(6)]

How to Request Information about Teacher Qualifications

If you want to learn the qualifications of your child's teachers and paraprofessionals, you need to write a letter to request this information from the school.

Since people often lack confidence in their ability to write letters, we have a sample letter that you can use as a template. Just call and request one at 304-632-2661 or stop by the school and request one.
