Greetings fellow shipmates,
Our August meeting was another great gathering, topped with an outstanding presentation from our guest speaker, CAPT Brett Ayotte. CAPT Ayotte is the Program Manager for Northrop Grumman on the Advanced SEAL Delivery System (ASDS) project. His brief on the Navy’s first dry combat submersible designed to deliver SEALs and their combat gear was very interesting and truly enlightening. It’s amazing to this old chief just how far our beloved ‘boat service’ has come in just a few short years!
Next month, our guest speaker will be CAPT David Portner who will be discussing current and future submarine onboard electronic warfare and imaging sensors. Kudos go to Ron Williams for helping to setup this briefing which will be one you won’t want to miss, either!
Sadly, I regret to announce that shipmate Curt Haggard has decided to resign his position as Vice
Commander. Curt certainly has been instrumental in the growth of our membership, the new programs and activities that have made our meetings fun to attend and he has been a big help to me with the myriad of administrative tasks associated with running the base. Thank you Master Chief for a job well done! In his stead, shipmate Tommy Perrault has agreed to serve as Vice Commander until we have elections for the new base officers at the end of the year.
As always, we capped this month’s meeting with another ‘Silent Service’ video in the lounge and shared a few sea stories over ‘milk and cookies’. Another great time with some fine shipmates and a BRAVO
ZULU to those of you who work ‘behind the scenes’ to make these outstanding meetings happen.
Cheers mates,
Ray

INUTES
– AUGUST 2004
Northern Virginia Base
The meeting was called to order at 10:35 AM, 14 August, by the Base Commander, Ray Stone. The meeting was held at the American Legion Post 176, Springfield, Virginia.
Chaplain Al Friedrich gave the invocation.
The Base Commander, Ray Stone read the names of the boats lost in the month of August which were:
USS S-39 SS-144 14-August-1942
USS FLIER 13-August-1944
USS HARDER
USS BULLHEAD
SS-250
SS-257
SS-332
24-August-1944
06-August-1945
USS COCHINO SS-345 26-August-1949
The Chief of the Boat (COB), Dex Armstrong, led all hands in the Pledge of Allegiance.
In his absence, the Base Secretary and Historian, Mark Riethmeier, has supplied a brief history regarding the loss of USS Flier. Tom Perrault, Acting Vice Commander read the brief history to all hands.
Flier (SS-250) was built by Electric Boat Co., Groton, CT and commissioned 18 October 1943, Lieutenant
Commander J. W. Crowley in command.
Flier reached Pearl Harbor from New London departed on her first war patrol, sailing 12 January 1944.
Damage suffered in a grounding near Midway requiring her to return to the west coast for repairs, and on 21
May she sailed again for action, heading for a patrol area west of Luzon. On 4 June, she attacked a wellescorted convoy for five merchantmen. Firing three torpedoes at each of two ships, she sent a large transport to the bottom and scored a hit on another ship, before clearing the area to evade counterattack.
Page 3
THE ONE MC

On 13 June 1944, Flier attacked a convoy of 11 ships, cargo carriers and tankers, guarded by at least six escorts.
The alert behavior of the escorts resulted in severe attack on Flier before she could observe what damage she had done to the convoy. On 22 June, she began a long chase after another large convoy, scoring four hits for six torpedoes fired at two cargo ships that day, and three hits for four torpedoes launched against another cargo ship of the same convoy the next day.
Flier put in to Fremantle, Australia, to refit between 5 July 1944 and 2 August, then sailed on her second war patrol, bound for the coast of Indochina. On the evening of 13 August, as she transited Balabac Strait on the surface, she was rocked by a great explosion. She sank in 1 minute after striking the mine, but 13 officers and men managed to escape. Eight of them reached the beach of Mantangula Island after 15 hours in the water.
Friendly natives guided them to a coastwatcher, who arranged for them to be picked up by the Redfin (SS-272) during the night of 30-31 August.
Flier is credited with having sunk 10,380 tons of Japanese shipping.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
By Bob 'Dex' Armstrong
I am, was, and shall ever be a Diesel Boat Sailor. It could properly be said that I am too stupid to be a nuclear powered qualified man... We'll never know, because the only way you would get me on one of those sonuvabitches would take Chloroform and one helluva logging chain.
I went to sub school in '59. By that time, diesel boats had reached a stage where they were the Naval equivalent of a 95 year old call girl. They were failing and falling apart all over the place, and parts were no longer available. By cosmetics we kept the old girls going until the last snap of their garters... And we loved them.
Page 8
THE ONE MC
United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. Northern Virginia Base
Rickover was an arrogant little sonuvabitch. The little weasel promoted, condoned and perpetuated friction between the conventional boat service and his little 'Merry Moonbeam Navy'. Today, nuke boats have come and gone, just like their diesel counterparts. Only thing is, outside of some long-range cruise missile Valentines, the entire nuke navy hasn't seen the combat service of a single WW II Balao or Tench boat. A cruise missile is the equivalent in manly expression of calling up the middle weight champion of the world on long distance phone service, to tell him you put dog crap in his mailbox. Sorry, but 'Red' Ramage, Slade Cutter and George White would have been lousy cruise missile boat sailors... They punched your lights out without going beyond their own zip code... And came home with a cigar box full of combat medals - Not gedunk, no-risk patrol pins.
It seems to me somehow, a submarine was never meant to rival ships of the Norwegian cruise lines. Hey, I watch the Discovery Channel... For years, I wondered why the milk and eggs never spoiled... In fact, I once set the world record for securing bulkhead flappers when the cook popped a 'blue egg' on the grill! I said to myself,
"How are those guys drinking milk on day 32 of one of them two month runs?" Simple. They carry cows... And chickens... In the after farm compartment. They probably trim ship by moving the herd.
We used to watch movies in the crew's mess. We elevated the projector on two Pyrex cereal bowls, and the screen was the size of the cover of Time magazine. On a good night, we could pack twenty guys in there. On a nuke boat, if you don't like the film, you can move to another theater, in another compartment... The only drawback being, if you come in late they make you sit in the balcony.
Nukes have beauty parlors, pool halls and Bingo night. The old oil burners had two or three decks of cards so damn dog-eared that guys in Maneuvering Room could figure out what hands were being delt just by listening to the cards being shuffled over the XJA.
I know that living in close proximity to the reactor on a nuke boat will not shrink one's testicles... The Navy says it... Science says it... And William Jefferson Clinton will give you his word, and we all know how reliable that is. Still, they've never explained the voice change of the 'Buck Rodgers' fleet.
No, I don't want to ride any submarine named for characters appearing on past or present postage stamps, or negotiable currency, or any place found on a AAA TripTik. At New London, we were taught submarines were named for fish and other denizens of the deep, not Al Gore and East Jeezus, Minnesota.
We had one crew - total accountability. When equipment screwed up, the old man knew exactly who to light up.
It was not uncommon to see boat sailors with smoking hip pockets. There wasn't any of this 'Blue crew - Gold crew', 'He said - She said', bullshit either.
And another thing... The nuke boats paint big black dots all over their scope fairings... What the hell for?
Camouflage??? Now, who's this gonna fool? A big contraption sticking up in the middle of the gahdam ocean with big black polka dots all over it. Do they actually think that somewhere on the globe there are folks stupid enough to collectively mistake that scope for a speckled trout?
I'm sure glad that I was fortunate enough to ride boats before Dorothy and the Wizard moved in...
Maybe we were the lads from the wrong side of the tracks. Maybe we did hot sack, drink coffee with oil slick rainbows floating in it, smelled like the bottom of an iguana cage, and lived on sea store smokes and dirty books. At least we weren't required to drop our skivvies every night and take caliper readings on our fixtures of manhood.

A report presented as witnessed by the NOVA Base Historian – Mark Riethmeier
As a member of the Submarine Directorate of the Naval Sea Systems Command, some fellow employees and I were fortunate to obtain tickets for the Christening ceremonies of the Precommissioning Unit (PCU) Texas,
(SS-775) at Northrop-Grumman, Newport News on 31 July 2004.
Speakers at the Christening ceremonies included Thomas Schievelbein (President NGNN); John Casey
(President EB Corp); Jo Ann Davis (House of Representatives – VA); Gordon R. England (Secretary of the
Navy), ADM Frank Bowman (Director, Naval Reactors); Senator Kat Bailey Hutchison (TX); and the First
Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush.
As the First Lady, Laura Bush, approached the podium, she was welcomed with a long lasting, standing innovation. Senator Hutchison recommended (due to experience) that Mrs. Bush should try to make contact on the first attempt. The President’s only remark was that the First Lady should not miss! The First Lady said that she has observed many baseball games and was ready for the task at hand. With that, Mrs. Bush broke the bottle on the first try!
Despite the temperature, the event was worth every minute!

VIRGINIA Getting Underway VIRGINIA on Alpha Trials
The VIRGINIA is the newest class of attack submarine. VIRGINIA, for those unaware, is the boat we sponsor.
The class submarine has a displacement of 7,835 tons, is 377 feet long and has a beam of 34 feet. She has four
21-inch torpedo tubes and 12 vertical launch tubes for specifically Tomahawk land-attack missiles.
Two formerly competitive shipyards accomplished a joint construction effort. General Dynamics Electric Boat constructed the forward section, while Northrop-Grumman Newport News constructed the after section.
VIRGINIA was christened on 16 August 2003. Her sponsor was Lynda Johnson Robb and the key speaker was
Senator George Allen. She is currently conducting Sea Trials; successfully completing her Alpha Trials.
Ships in the Class are VIRGINIA (SSN-774), TEXAS (SSN-775), HAWAII (SSN-776), NORTH CAROLINA
(SSN-777) and just assigned, NEW HAMPSHIRE (SSN-778).
The following is additional information provided to base members but not presented at the monthly meeting.
For those interested in becoming a member of the American Legion, membership dues are $24 per year at Post
