FROM ROBERT OAKES, VIA THE SOUTHERN YOUTH LEAGUE BULLETIN
Maryse Oakes 1950-2013
The Registrations Manager Maryse Oakes (& my Mum) sadly passed away on Wednesday 27th February 2013
having spent the previous five days in intensive care following a suspected cardiac arrest.
I would like to place on record a personal thank you for the overwhelming support and comforting kind
words that have been sent by Southern Youth League clubs & match officials by text messages, e-mails,
letters, condolence cards and/or telephone calls. She will be missed most by myself but I know that she will
be sorely missed by the whole Southern Youth League community and local non-league football in general.
The funeral has been arranged for Thursday 21st March 2013. Everybody is welcome to attend the church
service which will be held at 11am in St. Mary’s Parish Church, London Road, Ewell Village, Surrey, KT17 2AY.
A private burial for family, neighbours and friends will take place in Epsom Cemetry at 12:30pm.
Everybody after the church service is welcome back for the wake/“celebration of life” which will be taking
place at Southern Youth League headquarters - Sutton United F.C., Gander Green Lane, Sutton, Surrey, SM1
2EY
As a person who loved flowers, especially Roses, Chrysanthamums, Bizzie Lizzies, Lobelia and Pansies, she
bequeathed that Flowers were to be warmly encouraged at her funeral – flowers must be delivered to the
funeral directors A & E Longhurst, 21 Kingston Road, Ewell, Surrey. KT17 2DX by 9am on 21 st March.
Alternatively donations by cheque are also welcome if you wish to make a donation to “The British Heart
Foundation” instead of sending flowers – cheques to be sent to the same address as the flowers.
Robert Oakes – Chief Executive
GUERNSEY FC

Town of the Northern League over two legs on Saturdays 23 and 30 March, to see who will face either
Tunbridge Wells or Shildon in the Final at Wembley on Saturday 4 May
The League will issue a statement concerning Guernsey’s backlog of fixtures later this week.
Weather permitting, this week’s fixtures go ahead, namely away to Bedfont Sports on Tuesday and at
home to South Park next Sunday

MORRELL’S MUSINGS
'Midweek Musings' 4th - 8th March 2013
Hello and as always a huge Welcome to our
Midweek Round-Up of all things Cherry Red
Records Combined Counties League and a little bit
more.
With the exception of Monday evening this past
midweek has once again been somewhat plentiful
out and about. Join me if you will as we look back
commencing with as always our Premier Division.
First stop we call in at Weycourt whereupon
Badshot Lea welcomed our current Premier
Division league leaders Egham Town for the
evening.
With games in hand on second placed Epsom &
Ewell, you knew before hand that a game like this
was never going to be easy especially as previous
home results against each other would testify. In
addition to this an early season F.A. Cup exit
certainly suggested that they would certainly have
to be at their very best.
Early exchanges were relatively even but on
twenty four minutes the visitors Brendan Matthew
latched on to a delightful through ball from Luke
Muldowney and it was 1-0 Egham.
Having got to the second half with a narrow lead
Egham set about making their advantage count.
Barely seven minutes into the second period a
second goal, courtesy of Jamie Read, doubled their
advantage followed minutes after by a third via
Tom Hedges. Chances were still being created but
to no avail though- 3-0 final score to Egham Town
on the night a good night's work rewarded.
Horley Town provides us with our next port of call
for the quick return match with Camberley Town.
Just a couple of days had passed since these two
sides fought out a 2-2 draw over at Krooner Park
with the home side equalising very deeply into
added on time. This obviously spurred Camberley
on coming into the game which throughout was a
good one to watch. Two goals in the opening
thirteen minutes courtesy of John Birch and then
Nathan Turner looked to see the visitors well on
the way to maximum points.
John Eldren moments into the second period
halved the deficit and it was game on as Horley
went in search of an equaliser. Despite several
attempts it was not to be though and all three
points were bagged by the visitors. Really
enjoyable game to watch this one for the
moderate crowd in attendance including myself
both sides playing some really good football.
Out of form Hanworth Villa welcomed Ash United
to the Range hoping to be able to put past
disappointments behind them since their exit from
the F.A. Carlsberg Vase. Adam Baigent put the
home side one up on seventeen minutes but as in
recent times 'Villa' found the going tough and on
just about the half hour mark they conceded
courtesy of Liam Pearson with his first of two goals
for the evening. His second followed ten minutes
later to give the visitors the lead going into the
interval.
Eventually in the second period, on seventy
minutes to be exact, the contest was all square
again thanks to Ricky Farnden. So the road to
recovery began by virtue of picking up this point
which was about right on the reflection of the
game.
Briefly looking around the Premier Division activity
wise, Tuesday evening saw Bedfont Sports secure
a 2-1 home win over Farnham Town as did
Molesey and Raynes Park Vale against South Park
and Hartley Wintney respectively.
Just one drawn game Tuesday evening was at
Chalky Lane where hosts Chessington & Hook and
Croydon finished 0-0.
Four Division One games took place on this same
evening at Cobham, Feltham, Frimley Green and
Westfield respectively and on each occasion home
wins were secured.
First stop we call in at current leaders Frimley
Green where South Kilburn were visitors. Both
teams started well and played some really good
football with limited goal action and some hard
but fair tackling. With their first real attempt the
visitors took the lead which so often happens. Just
about on 44 minutes though the contest was all
square again. Merriman was put through on goal
seizing his opportunity.
Encouraged by this Frimley started the second half
brightly and were rewarded with a second goal on
the hour mark. A free kick just inside the Kilburn
half found Paul Dennes in the opponents box, with
the ball at his feet he duly struck what ended up
being the winning goal. It would be fair to say that
from there the game certainly opened up and
despite the visitors being reduced to ten men kept
plugging away but to no avail though. All in all the
game was played in good spirit throughout.
Meanwhile over at Westfield local rivals Knaphill
provided the opposition. Despite a defensive
reshuffle due to the absence of several players
John Cormer's men held on for another clean
sheet in a highly entertaining game which saw
chances at each end including a penalty that had
been converted three times to give the home side
the lead on just after the half hour mark. The
second half like the first produced chances each
end. Eventually though despite a good twenty
minute rally the elusive equaliser did not
materialise and much to the relief of the home
faithful up popped Rob Jones who lofted the ball
over the opposing keeper with his first touch and
the points were bagged.
