MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS COMES TO KILKENNY AS PART OF ITS
WORLD TOUR 2009
A museum dedicated to broken hearts has been founded in Croatia. Authors of the
concept Olinka Vištica and Drazen Grubišić decided to set up the museum after
consoling friends over their failed romances. This museum has everything from romantic
and touching letters to different gifts given to lovers like teddy bears and photos, but also
such unusual examples as a leg prosthesis donated by a war veteran who fell in love
with his physiotherapist and a gall stone. Every single object on display is anonymous,
and has a description / story related to the relationship that was behind it. After the
success of the first display in Zagreb this unique museum is touring the world.

MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS: YOUR INVITATION TO BECOME PART OF
THE EXHIBITION!
This is your chance to be a part of this museum dedicated to broken hearts and lost
loves! All of us have experienced the end of a loving relationship, whether with a lover,
friend, or family member. Most of us have hidden away the objects that remind us of
these painful heartbreaks. Have you ever wished there was a meaningful way of letting
go of these 'things?' this museum is a fantastic way of preserving beautiful, enriching
even painful, moments from your past? The Museum is an artistic project in which
everyone can participate. It is serving to honour our emotional heritage, offering us the
opportunity to preserve those memories collectively. By contributing your own mementos
you will become part of the exhibition when it comes to Kilkenny. Arts Officer, Mary Butler
says that she is very excited to be bringing this unique show to Kilkenny. She is eager for
people to respond to this unique opportunity and to donate items. This in turn will further
enrich the show and it also offers people the opportunity to anonymously tell their stories
of lost love and heartbreak to the Irish audience and beyond as the exhibition continues
to tour the world.

Barnstorm Presents Theatre Week for Young People in July
This summer Barnstorm will once again be running its hugely popular Theatre Week for
Young People from the 6th to the 10th of July. For youths aged 10 to 18, it will provide an
intensive and fun exploration of theatre and drama, and afford a real opportunity to
develop theatre skills and develop self confidence.
The sessions will be led by members of Barnstorm’s team of theatre professionals and
will take place in Barnstorm’s rehearsal and performance space The Barn. It promises to
be an intense and rewarding 5 days for all participants. Theatre Week for children from
10 to 12 years will take place from 10am to1pm daily and the more advanced 13 to 18
year group will take place from 2.30pm to 5.30pm daily.
During the week the participants will learn skills in acting and directing, create their own
characters from scratch and as a group, devise their own performance. They will learn
about aspects such as vocal range and quality, working from script, improvising and
devising, and even gain some practical experience in lighting and sound. But above all, it
will be a fun and challenging experience for those taking part. The course is mainly
aimed at novices so participants needn’t have any theatre experience. This is a great
opportunity for young people to get to work creatively and to mix with their peers.
The course costs €80 for the week (all materials and mid-session snacks and drinks are
provided). Early booking is essential as places are limited to 16 participants on each
course. For further information and to book your place, contact Barnstorm Theatre
Company on (056) 7751266 or info@barnstorm.ie.

A notice to all funded organisations on the Arts Council's reduced budget allocation
You may be aware that the Arts Council grant-in-aid from Government has been reduced
twice in recent months - in February and again in April. The combined effect of these cuts
is a loss of €2.35m on the sum originally provided in the October 2008 budget.
This means that, at the time of writing, the Arts Council's grant-in-aid for 2009 is
€73.35m.
The Arts Council has given careful consideration to how it will manage this altered
allocation. It has taken account of the fact that, if implemented this far into the year,
budget cuts would cause great difficulty for organisations. Accordingly, at its meeting on
28 April, the Council decided that it will not revisit grants to organisations for 2009.
The impact of these recent cuts, however, will be reflected in reduced funds available for
2010 grant allocations.
The Council is now turning its attention to planning for 2010 and beyond. We would alert
you to the likelihood that the funding context next year will be extremely difficult. We will
be in touch again after we have considered further our strategy, to advise you of our
approach and to allow you to plan accordingly.
We will also advise you separately of the application deadlines this year for funding in
2010. These deadlines are likely to be set for later in the year than usual.
The intention of the approach outlined in this article is to support you in the immediate
term to realise the activities planned for this year and, most importantly, to assist you in
planning your organisation's future in what will be very challenging circumstances.
