St Edmundsbury Cathedral Following in the footsteps of Edmund, King and Martyr JOB TITLE: Administrator and Director of Commerce LINE MANAGER: The Dean JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the governance and legalities of the Cathedral, working with the Association of English Cathedrals. Generate revenue and raise income to support on-going and new initiatives for the Cathedral. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary: £42,000 Hours of Work: 35 hours Annual Leave: 25 days paid leave per year. This is exclusive of public holidays. Contract: The post is subject to a three month probationary period. The Cathedral Church of St James and St Edmund, Bury St Edmunds, was created in 1914 when the existing St James’s Church was selected as the seat of the new Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. The Cathedral remains also a parish church. The building was enlarged by Stephen Dykes Bower in the 1960s and its central tower was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2005. New cloisters, chapels and other building works were completed and consecrated in 2009. Further major projects were completed in 2010, namely the installation of the vaulted ceiling and the refurbishment of the Cathedral organ. St Edmundsbury Cathedral maintains a daily round of worship with the Anglican choral tradition of music at its heart. The Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship are used on a daily basis for routine services and there is a vast range of special services of celebration, thanksgiving and commemoration when local and national bodies and individuals attend. In addition, there are a significant number of secular events such as concerts and art exhibitions on an almost weekly basis. The Cathedral is also a principal destination in East Anglia for tourists and other visitors and also provides a significant educational programme for schools visits. St Edmundsbury Cathedral Enterprises Limited is made up of The Cathedral Gift Shop, The Edmund Gallery, our Tourist Information Point, Pilgrim’s Kitchen (café/restaurant) and our external events facilities. St Edmundsbury Cathedral is a lively and exciting place in which to work. The completion of major building works has seen the Cathedral grow in size and activity and the place has become busier. The extraordinary variety of people who are associated with the Cathedral and the remarkable diversity of the events which take place here mean that there is much to capture the imagination of the Cathedral’s employees, much to be done, and much to enjoy. ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES Administrator To attend meetings of the Chapter and Council. The senior lay appointment at the Cathedral who is able to share and develop a culture of mutual trust with all the statutory bodies of the Cathedral. Commitment to the mission and ministry of the Cathedral and to the rest of the Cathedral team. Point of contact for AEC and CAFA. Point of contact for Bury Town Council. Point of contact with Church Commissioners, confirming clergy stipend each month and responsible for overseeing and completing annual Cathedral returns. Responsible for In-House Legal function to include reviewing contracts and commercial arrangements and negotiate claims prior to litigation if needed. Responsible for auditing and the management of Cathedral Inventory and creating archival procedure. Responsible for financial matters concerning properties and estate management. Responsible for the security of buildings and properties and point of contact with police and counter terrorism officer. Point of contact for external complaints. Attend Heads of Department meetings. Attend Wolf Pack meetings and be on call in an emergency. Attend Leadership and Strategy meetings in order to reflect and plan for the successful future of the Cathedral and its employees. Ensure open, transparent and inclusive ways of working throughout the organisation, with good engagement and communication, particularly in respect of communicating Chapter’s decisions and individual departmental strategies across all parts of the organisation. Working with relevant Chapter members to ensure that the Cathedral diary is managed efficiently, with a mind to the complexity of the daily, seasonal and annual round of events, and able to balance and manage all of its activities within the overarching framework of its mission. To undertake professionally and appropriately any other duties reasonably requested. Director of Commerce Attend Finance Committee and Enterprises Limited meetings. Senior executive role - developing, setting, monitoring and delivering budgets. Line Manager for Head of Finance, Enterprises Retail Manager, Enterprises Catering Manager and Events Co-ordinator. Liaise with Foundation fundraising and attend meetings. Ensure best use is made of Cathedral facilities. Ensure all permissions, licences and copyright are sort. Ensure return of Annual accounts. Authorise all payments between £500 and £1,000 and approve all on-line banking payments electronically. Point of contact for legacies and donations. Attend Forum twice yearly to present Enterprises plans and accounts. Attend Arts & Events Committee, Fabrics Working Group and Communications Committee Meetings. Oversee major income generation and fabric projects. Deliver additional new income generation events. Manage the balance between the sometimes conflicting uses of the Cathedral in a time when the Cathedral is both a place of prayer and mission and also needs to build its income generation to ensure its sustainability for future generations. Attend Health and Safety meetings and be accountable for safety planning at income generation events. Develop Sponsorship relations. Ensure that all resources (people, property and money) are managed effectively and efficiently in support of the strategy, aims, values and objectives of the Cathedral as determined by, and within the budgetary framework set by the Chapter. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Qualities Someone who is willing to take a full part in the life and world of the Cathedral community and the wider community. Able to demonstrate project leadership and management. A person of proven commitment and absolute integrity. A capable and efficient organiser, able to operate flexibly and prioritise issues and opportunities as needed. A proven manager with financial skills, probably gained by having held a senior general or financial management post. Able to demonstrate an ability to contribute creatively to strategic planning. Capable of careful and detailed working as well as being able to think laterally and see the broader context. Excellent interpersonal skills. Sensitive and diplomatic in managing complex issues. A proven ability to maintain good relationships with colleagues and ‘clients’ Experience of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Desired Qualities A genuine occupational requirement, a member of a Christian denomination which is in sympathy with the Church of England, with some knowledge of the mission and ethos of an Anglican Cathedral. The ability to think outside the box. Energy, enthusiasm and a good sense of humour.
