Dr. Brown welcomes guests, families and friends to Barrack Hebrew Academy
and our inaugural evening Awards Ceremony. Also acknowledges Rochelle and
Robert Hirsh and Morton and Carmi Levine, award sponsors and parents of
alum. Rochelle is also a past Board president.
Dr. Brown introduces Joshua Stein ’11, Student Association President, who will
deliver the D’var Torah.

and daughter Betsy Richman, to recognize excellence and sportsmanship in a
graduating member of the soccer team who embodies the ideals of Barrack and

Queenie Barnett Drama Award: Given in her memory by her husband Dr. Alan

embodies the qualities of historical inquiry and intellect exemplified by
Dr. Gorvine and who shares Doc’s passion for exploring the dilemmas of modern

Jewish Studies:
Presenter: Rabbi Judd Levingston, Jewish Studies Director
Barrack Hebrew Academy Essay Contest for 2010/5770: Made possible this
year by an anonymous donor to recognize Barrack students whose essays –
reflecting on ethics and values, especially as they relate to the Ten
Commandments – were judged as superior for their wisdom and insight. First,
second and third place prizes were awarded to students in grades 9 & 10 and in
11 & 12.
 2nd Place Winner in the 11 & 12 Grade Category – Hannah Dardashti
Simon and Ruth Levine Prize: Sponsored by Rabbi Morton Levine in memory
of his parents to recognize a student for activities on behalf of a minyan at school
or in a congregation and to recognize the extra effort made to enhance the
religious experience.

Sarah Whiteman Award: Sponsored by Harriet Feinberg to a student who
exhibited an energetic commitment to Tikkun Olam, expressed through activities
such as community service, Tzedakah, activism in human rights, or sustained

who perpetuates the values that were important to Edward Domers. He was an
exemplary role model; he was a real “team player” who consistently cared about

Joseph Levitsky Award: Sponsored by Janet and Aron Davidson in memory of
his grandfather, Joseph Levitsky – who was instrumental in founding Akiba
Hebrew Academy – to a senior who has made outstanding individual strides.

the editorial boards of the school’s publications for journalistic talent, creativity,
integrity and a commitment to discovering the facts, and the courage to print the

constant pursuit of perfection.

CONCLUSION
Dr. Brown asks that all the parents of our award winners in the audience stand and be
recognized, for it is their support and dedication to their children, to a stellar Jewish day
school education, and to our community that make an evening such as this possible. And,
of course, our gratitude to Barrack’s administration and faculty who motivate and inspire
our students to excel in every way.
We are proud of all our students; thank everyone for joining us this evening; and know
that there will be many more occasions to celebrate the accomplishments of Jack M.
Barrack Hebrew Academy students now and in the future.
