Creating a“Found Poem”

Exercise:

A Found Poem is created by taking existing text and refashioning, reordering and reshaping it into an independent poem. A Found Poem is the literary equivalent of a collage, a word collage.

Step 1: After watching To Kill A Mockingbird and listening to Jem and Aunt Stephanie’s description of Boo Radley, use a highlighter to select words or phrases from the film script that describe Boo Radley.

Step 2: Next, review the words you’ve highlighted and create an independent poem. Be creative in arranging your words. You may connect multiple words and phrases into one line of poetry.

Remember Found Poems do NOT have to rhyme. Finally, give a title to your poem.

 The poem must be at least 10 lines long.

Title “A Maniac”

1. Wonder what he looks like?

2. Eyes are popped and he drools

3. Teeth are yellow and rotten

4. Eats raw squirrels and all the cats he can catch

5. Boo only comes out at night—pitch dark

6. HE’S DANGEROUS--DANGEROUS

7. Lock him up—chained to a bed

8. Send him to an asylum

9. When you wake up at night, you can hear him

10. Lock him up!
