Animal Research Report Update Yea! The first leg of our research report journey is complete. Students brought in their organizers and we discussed (individually) what content could be added if students needed more information on certain cards. Students should have at least 5 graphic organizers: Introduction, Physical Characteristics, Diet, Habitat, and Interesting Facts. Additional organizers may be used such as endangered species (how and why), behavior, etc. if desired. This week your child’s homework assignment is to take each of the organizers and turn them into paragraphs. Have your child write one paragraph per night in legible writing. This rough draft is due next Thursday, March 7th. Students have practiced writing paragraphs in class with my sample report that we did as a group. We read books about my animal, took notes on each of the graphic organizers, then took each one and turned it into a paragraph. Please help your child follow this format for each paragraph. TS (Topic Sentence- introducing WHAT this paragraph is going to tell the reader) D (Detail about this paragraph’s topic) D (Detail about this paragraph’s topic) D (Detail about this paragraph’s topic) CS (Closing Sentence- wrap up or rephrase what the topic was in this paragraph) *Paragraphs should have at least 3 details in them but can have more* Sample Introductory Paragraph: My animal research report will be on the kangaroo and you will learn many things about it. I will describe its physical characteristics and what species it is. I will also tell you about the habitat of the kangaroo and where it can be found. You will learn about what types of food the kangaroo eats and many interesting facts about the kangaroo. For example, did you know that kangaroos can neither walk or run? They get around by hopping! There are many things you will learn about the kangaroo.
