The Great Gatsby Journal For each of the nine chapters you will be expected to write the following in your Gatsby Journals: Title entries with the chapter number, and number and list each section (ex.1. Summary). There are three assignments; each assignment covers three chapters. So you will state the chapter, complete the four prompts below, and then repeat it for each of the other two chapters in each assignment. 1. Summary--Write a five sentence chapter summary. 2. Characterization--From each chapter choose a different character to focus on. a. Name the character. b. Choose a quote that you think best represents the character. Write the quote, give the page number, and then explain the quote’s significance. c. Use specific textual evidence to describe in 2-3 sentences the character’s best and/or worst qualities in this chapter. d. In a short paragraph describe the character's role in the novel. 3. Quotation--From each chapter choose one meaningful quote (different from the quote used above), and then describe its significance in the novel. 4. Symbols--Each chapter note at least two sightings of one or more of the following symbols: the color green, the color white, silver and gold, the ash heap, the eyes of T.J. Eckleberg, Gatsby's career/Nick's career, Gatsby's library of uncut books/Nick's unread books, Dan Cody, East Vs. West Egg, rain in chapter five, heat in chapter seven, Wolfsheim's cufflinks, faded timetable (showing names of Gatsby's guests), Gatsby's cars/clothes or other symbols that you find in the chapter, including color imagery. Explain the context of the symbol and its significance in the chapter. 2-3 sentences. All journals submitted to turnitin.com.
