Speech Contest Winner, Casey Love 8th Grade Speech Contest Held On Monday, March 21st, the Third Annual Eighth Grade Speech Contest was held at Washington Middle School. During the week leading up to the contest, the students selected their own topics, researched them, and then wrote their own speeches, all the while focusing on writing well-supported paragraphs and stellar introductions. Students then handed in their speeches, and based on content, ten finalists were chosen to participate in the speech contest. The ten finalists were Kelly Baldwin (Humane Society), Philip Baxter (pogo sticks), Kelsi Clark (Statue of Liberty), Danielle Johnson (follow your dreams), Angelica Kiesinger (Red Cross), Joseph Kepler (atomic warfare), Casey Love (cinema), Molly Price (natural wonders of the world), Trevor Sisson (drug dogs), and Heather Zimba (Edgar Allan Poe). After being chosen, the students practiced after school in order to polish the deliveries. Many days of practice later, the finalists were ready to compete. While presenting their speeches on Monday, all finalists did a fantastic job! Casey Love came in first while Danielle Johnson and Heather Zimba were the runners up. They are selling hundreds of them to make money for their field trip to Cleveland which is coming up in June. This educational trip is designed to complement the middle school experience. Students will visit the Cleveland Zoo, do hands-on activities at the Science Center, watch an Omni-Max movie on Egypt, and tour the Cleveland Browns’ stadium. The $55 fee includes transportation, lunch and dinner, and admissions to all the attractions. Our goal is to make sure all students (except those with OSS and recurring ISS) take advantage of this trip. We know from past years that this trip is a fun and memorable experience for our kids. So, keep selling (and eating!) those candy bars! 7th Grade Science – We are having a great time in 7th grade science. Most recently we have been identifying mineral samples. The students were given twelve mineral samples and a chart of mineral characteristics. They had to identify the minerals using the information on the chart. As a special treat we also looked at fluorescent minerals in class. These are special minerals that are one color under regular light and glow a different color under U.V. light, such as a black light. 8th Grade Science – We are going through the long process of learning about Classification. Not only must the students learn how the classification system works but they must also learn the characteristics of the organisms that inhabit the five kingdoms of classification. They must also be able to give examples of organisms that are in a particular kingdom and organisms that are not members of that kingdom. There is a lot involved with this unit and lots of information for which the students are responsible.
