Diagnosing Holden Caulfield
Holden Caulfield exhibits many symptoms that can lead to various mental disorders.
Throughout the novel, Holden displays abnormal mental behavior and shows signs of
both mental and physical deterioration. You and your group will be playing the role of
the psychoanalyst to which Holden has told his story. Each member of the group will be
in charge of investigating certain chapters of the novel in order to find appropriate
symptoms and diagnose Holden with one of the following mental disorders:

Social Anxiety Disorder
Grief and Loss
Each member of the group will be responsible for approximately 5 to 7 chapters. Your
job is to PROVE your diagnosis based on your group. If you are in the Depression group,
you must find examples/quotes showing the various symptoms of the disorder. Each
member of the group is responsible for their own work. EACH EXAMPLE MUST
INCLUDE THE SYMPTOM(S) THAT HOLDEN DISPLAYS AS WELL AS AN
EXPLANATION OF HOW THIS QUOTE SHOWS THAT PARTICULAR
SYMPTOM. The group must combine their work in one NEAT copy after each example
is found. Each member of the group must find AT LEAST FIVE EXAMPLES that
involve AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS.
