BROCHURE OF A MISSION You will be making a brochure about one of the 21 missions in California. You will be using a variety of references to find information: World Almanac, Encyclopedia, books about your mission, an atlas, and the Internet. Please keep all of your work together in Research Organizer. You will be gathering information at the library, using a computer, and doing some work in class. You will also need to complete some assignments as homework. Keep your work neat and the brochure attractive to the “traveler”! I suggest that you use the “cut and paste” method. Draw or write information on the computer or by hand, cut out and paste onto brochure. If you make a mistake you can re-do your work without ruining the whole page or brochure. BROCHURE Cover – Name of mission, year it was founded, and a sketch of the outside of the mission. 1st page – Think Like A Geographer - using a map of California, show the location of the mission and nearby cities. Add a written description of the location and write about the importance of the mission’s location and what advantages and disadvantages it caused. 2nd page-Think Like An Economist -include goods and services were produced and how were they distributed? What influences did the economy of the past have on the present day economy? 3rd page – Think Like a Historian - include how the mission was founded, the date it was founded, the number of the mission in the chain, what it was used for, who lived there, etc. 4th page –Think Like A Climatologist– using a World Almanac, write the high and low temperatures/rainfall of that area for a year. Advise visitors what months to travel for a visit and what clothing should be brought. Using bullets. 5th page – Think Like An Architect – include a drawing and pictures of your mission. Describe what the mission is made of, what the inside of the mission looks like, the gardens, landscape, and the significance of the structure. Are there symbolic structures like bells or towers? 6th page – Think Like A Biographer - who were the important people of this mission and what made them historical? Did they contribute to the success of the mission or try to destroy it? In addition to the brochure, choose one of the following: Make a poster about your mission. Include pictures or a sketch, and important information to “advertise” your mission. Lettering should be LARGE enough to see from across the room. Make a 3-D model of your mission using cardboard, clay, adobe, Styrofoam, etc. Label buildings, gardens, fountains, cemetery, etc. Pretend you are a missionary. Write a journal about “life in the mission”. This should have a weeks worth of entries. (7) Demonstrate a mission craft such as making an adobe brick or candle making. Make a display chart showing the process and create a sample to share in class. Come up with your own project idea and get it approved by me! DUE DATE: ___________________ MISSION BROCHURE CHECKLIST Step 1: Choose your mission. ______________________________________________ Step 2: Write your name and the mission’s name on your “Research Organizer”. Your “Research Organizer” should have the following subtopics: Map /Location History Economy Climate Architecture People Bibliography Step 3: Find books, Encyclopedias, websites, etc. to help your do your research. This project requires that you have three resources on your bibliography. Step 4: If possible, go and visit a mission. You are not expected to do this step, and if you are not able to visit your mission, make it seem like you were there and you are able to give an expert tour around the area. Use what we have learned from Google Earth to explore your site. Step 5: Take notes. DO NOT COPY WHOLE SENTENCES. Write phrases and facts in your own words. Keep notes simple and connect the information when writing your first draft. Step 6: Write your first draft. Make sure that you have included topic sentences and closing sentences for each subtopic. Edit your spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Step 7: Write your final copy and paste onto the brochure. This work should be neat and colorful. The written report will be a brochure that includes a map and description of the location, history, economy, architecture, climate and rainfall of the area, the people involved, and what the mission is used for today. In addition, students will have a choice for a “project”. They can make a 3-D model of a mission, write a journal, create a poster, or design a set of instructions and make a sample of a good that was produced to boost the economy, like adobe bricks or candles. Students will be given between 2-3 weeks to research their mission and complete a chosen project, 1 week to write a rough draft, and 1 week to rewrite and complete their final brochure. I will check that students have made a choice for their project after the first week of research, but the students will need to work on this at home for homework and during homeschool time. Please help your child stick to the timeline. Each student can create a “Research Organizer” to keep notes and work in, so it can be carried from a central location to school, library, or even a trip to a mission.
