7 Stars Jig in D / Cartmel Jig in D / Trip to Cartmel in D / Iron Legs in D
Notes - at this stage the arrangement groups instruments so that the people who play by ear can follow the other
instruments in their group to learn parts - this is a starting point to give us something concrete that we can build on, we
may make amendments so bring a pencil/pen/eraser to rehearsals and print off the combination of dots / notes that is right
for you.
Intro
Fiddles / Cello’s (?) / voices open with a drone on the D string harmonic
6/8 7 Stars - Key of D, start notes = daaaa
A1 harmonic drone continues and guitars pick the tune (note - we may add mandolins?)
A2 voices/fiddles switch to bowed chords, cellos come in & guitars pick the tune
B1 voices/fiddles/cellos/boxes play chords - wind/guitars play tune
B2 as B1 with bass and drums coming in softly
A3 voices drop out, fiddles/wind/boxes/banjo/mandolins play tune - cello/guitars/piano play chords bass /drums/bodhrans strong
A4 as A3
B3 as A3
B4 banjo/mandolins hold tune and slow the pace, piano/bass continue, drums go soft, bodhrans drop
out
6/8 Jig Link
Bass/soft drums continue
Boxes play 2 bars of 7 stars then hold A chords while banjo/mandolins play 2 bars of Cartmel Jig,
repeat this section again.
Everyone drops out, wind section repeat the last bar twice

A1 wind section play tune with piano (or 1-2 guitars) and quiet (!) drums
A2 wind/boxes play tune, cello/fiddles pluck chords, piano/drums continue, bass comes in
B1 as A2
B2 as A2 but with cello/fiddles switching to bowed chords, guitars join chords matching the rhythm of
the fiddles
A3 cello/fiddles/guitar/piano/bass/drums continue as B2 but reduce volume, tune drops out, clogs
come with Jig steps
A4 as A3 with wind/boxes/banjo/mandolin playing the tune, clogs drop out at the end of A4
B3 as A4 with fiddles switching to the tune
B4 as B3

Drums set 4/4 rhythm
Voices sing line 3 repeating ‘Trip to Cartmel, Cartmel’ (we may add an instrument to help with
pitching this)
4/4 Trip to Cartmel - Key of D, start notes = ceeg aeeg
A1 voices and drums continue, boxes play the tune, piano/bass/bodhrans join
A2 as A1 with guitars joining on chords
B1 voices drop out, fiddles/wind play tune, boxes continue with tune but drop volume, cello joins
bass/piano/percussion, banjo/mandolins join with line 3 playing the line the voices have been singing
B2 as B1 with voices rejoining, this time holding chords
A3/4 SOFT fiddles/boxes play tune, guitars/cello/bass play chords, percussion continues
Voices - Verse 1&2 of the Gathering
B3/4 as A3/4 with wind/banjo/mandolins joining on the harmony part (line 2)
Voices - Verse 3&4 of the Gathering
A5 voices fade out on a repeat of the last line
A5/6 everyone in with fiddles /mandolins playing the tune, wind/banjo/mandolin playing harmony (line
2), boxes (line 3).
B5 fiddles/boxes switch to chords - everyone else continues as in A6
B6 cello/fiddles/boxes hold chords, everyone else drops out - voices repeat Verse 4 of the gathering
