HU 184 Fundamentals of Music Theory 2
C-3, Cr-3
Course Description:
This course is a continuation of HU183 Fundamentals of Music Theory 1 with increasing
emphasis on traditional harmony with the addition of the study of seventh chords.
Prerequisite: HU183 Fundamentals of Theory 1.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
 Identify visually and aurally all triads and seventh chords.
 Explore and identify non-chordal tones, such as the passing tone, neighboring
tone, and suspension.
 Identify and compose using both primary and secondary chords as well as
borrowed chords.
 Demonstrate a knowledge of modulation.
 Compose and analyze 4-part counterpoint. Compose and perform extended
compositions in several different musical styles.
