YEAR 8 HISTORY CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY WORK 2015.
Mock exams lurk around the corner and it is important that you devote some time over the holiday
preparing for these exams. Short meaningful periods of work will be most useful to you. Try to
organise a timetable for yourself and stick to it!
The following tasks are to be attempted over the holiday.
1. Ensure that your file is well organised. It should be already!
MAKE SURE THAT YOU TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU!!
2. COMMON ENTRANCE CANDIDATES.
Select THREE reasonably large topics to revise for essays. Remember that you can choose work
from the period 1485-1750 or 1750-1914. Use these topic guides for the exam to help you select
material that will fit effectively.
Essay topics (two essays on paper for each topic) are as follows:
War and Rebellion.
Government / Parliament.
Religion.
Social and Economic History.
General Topics.
Examples would be Mary Tudor to fit religion, Elizabeth I to fit war (Armada), any of the
economic revolutions to fit social and economic etc. Remember that some reigns will fit into
more than one topic.
Plan some of the essay questions that you have been given. Use the essay format example to
plan out answers or write essays for your chosen topics. Of course you can attempt one or more
and hand in at the beginning of next term or email it to kbatchelor@prebendalschool.org.uk
Revise two source based topics: the Summer C.E. 2016 exam will contain ONE of the
following topics: Henry VIII and the Break From Rome or The Great Plague / Great Fire. You
will need to use your own knowledge as part of answering the source based question.
3. SCHOLARSHIP CANDIDATES.
Try to use past paper questions to help you plan out answers. Try to read and revise widely,
remembering that you need to adapt your knowledge to the demands of the question.
Tackle the scholarship paper that has been set. Your answers should be handed in at the
start of next term or email it to kbatchelor@prebendalschool.org.uk
4. MOCK COMMON ENTRANCE EXAM.
The paper lasts for 60 minutes.
Sources: There are three source based sections. You should attempt the set of source based
questions on the 1485-1750 period
Essay: Choose any ONE essay. The essays are open ended so choose the essay that fits one of
the topics you have chosen.
5. MOCK SCHOLARSHIP EXAM.
Take note of the paper format. Common Academic 60 minutes and consists of one essay and a
set of source based questions.
