In the novell „The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins the protagonist Katniss has to called tributes struggle for survival in an arena
where 24 children including herself have to kill each other until a
single tribute survives.
In the fight to the death, you need not only physical skills but also a
good mentaly condition in order to win.
If Katniss has what it takes to win the cruel games, will be discussed and answered in the following essay.
To find out which skills Katniss has and what type of a person she
is (because that is also very important) we have to go back in time
to the events that shaped her into that person she is in the present
day.
Katniss father, a coal miner, died in a mine accident when she was
only eight years old. This tragic and shocking moment left her alone
with her little sister Prim and her mother. In the following months the
family nearly starved to death because her mother had a great depression and was not able to keep the family alive.
Before it was too late Katniss took responsibility ventured out in the
woods and hunted in order to feed the family.
This choice changed everything. Katniss was forced to grow up and
end her childhood. She also got coldhearded with her mother hated
her for that what she hasn’t done.
In the following years her skills with the bow grew and she got to
know a lot about herbs that grow in the wood.
Katnisses great skills with the bow and her hunting experience give
her an edge in the hunger games. However, the tributes of District 1
and 2, also called careers, have also great skills with weapons because they trained their whole lives for the Hunger Games.
Another reason why she has a good chance of winning is that she
is trying to get home because of her sister Prim, which she volunteered for.
This sacrifice not only saved her sister but gave Katniss an even
bigger advantage: the sympathism of sponsors. They can keep her
alive in the arena and her mentor Haymitch tries everything to give
her enough sponsors.
But Katniss has also disadvantages while her sacrifice is a great
entertainment for sponsors the other tributes see this relationship to
her sister as a sign of weakness and try to hunt her down.
Her other big disadvantage is that she lets her get influenced by
kind people e.g. Peetah Mellark by people. In the arena this could
be death.
All in all, Katniss Everdeen has great chances in winning the Hunger Games.
Her skills with the bow make her absolutely deadly in the arena.
And the hype for her that rose in the Capitol (mainly because of
Cinna’s great dresses) got her a lot of fans that might be able to
sponsor.
Of course Katniss has disadvantages but her advantages are
greater and that’s why Katniss has got all it takes to wind the 74th
annual Hunger Games.
