Name______________________________________ Ms. Hampson American Literature – Period______ May 27, 2011 EXTRA CREDIT Due Friday, June 10th: Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises Reflection Assignment Over the next two weeks, you have the opportunity to independently read Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. During this time, you should keep a series of quote-reaction reading logs from which you will choose your 3 best to type and submit for extra credit on Friday, June 10th. You will also upload your 3 best quote-reaction reading logs to www.turnitin.com by 11pm on Friday, June 10th. (Please be sure to save all 3 reading logs in ONE file and then upload that file to www.turnitin.com.) Each reading log should include one cited quote and a detailed, thoughtful reflection concerning the quote. The cited quote and thorough reflection should be approximately one page in length, typed and double-spaced. Therefore, your completed submission should be at least 3 pages in length. In your reflections, you should make connections between Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. You may also wish to include connections that you make between T.S. Eliot’s poem, “The Hollow Men,” and these novels. (We will be studying Eliot’s poem together in class next week.) Keep in mind that all three of these pieces were written in the 1920s by authors who were trying to make sense of their post- World War I generation, also known as the Lost Generation. IMPORTANT TIPS FOR SUCCESS: READ THE BOOK. Do NOT resort to copying ideas from the Internet because you will receive an automatic zero on the assignment. Make sure that you edit your writing to omit any errors in spelling, grammar, or mechanics. Be as original and creative as possible.
