Learning Goal: I will plan for my own future.
Journal Prompt: Write as many words down that come to mind when you think about
your future.
Standard in Practice: TAL rubric – “I can” and “I want”
Whole Group: Charlie Grumbine, computer engineer for HP, came in and presented the
most probable steps
Independent Practice: Write a letter to your future self. Prompt: Imagine what your life
will be like when you walk across the stage in May of 2013. What would you say to
yourself? What does your future look like? What have you accomplished? What college
are you attending?
Tuesday Nov. 17th, 2009
Learning Goal: I will improve my individual SRI test.
Journal Prompt: “Our job in life is not to get ahead of others, but to get ahead of ourselvesto break our own records, to be better today than tomorrow.” First, put that quote in your
words. Second, write a goal for your SRI test score.
Standard in Practice: CO Reading Standards 1 and 6
Vocabulary Terms:
Reading Strategy: SRI testing
Whole Group: Students are split into two groups. If not testing, students work quietly in
groups to finish pp. 77-81. This served as review for last week’s objectives (i.e. identifying
and correcting run-on sentences as well as review for the upcoming unit test). After
finishing workbook pages, students silent read and worked on showing comprehension
through a reading log.
Small Group: Students will take SRI test and show growth.
Wednesday Nov. 18th, 2009
Learning Goal: I will identify and use the four types of sentences. I will comprehend the
story and answer questions about the text.
Journal Prompt: What are your two favorite things about this class? What are two things
you would change?
Standard in Practice: 3.c, 6.a, 1.c, 1.d
Vocabulary Terms: declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory
Reading Strategy: Group Reading
Whole Group: Mrs. Mahobian is out with the English Dept. at Core Matters.
Students worked on types of sentences worksheet.
Next, students read the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, and filled out questions to test
comprehension of the text.
Thursday, Nov. 19th, 2009
Learning Goal: I will make connections between the documentary and my own education.
Journal Prompt: Create a double map. Put Montbello in one circle and A Good Education
in the other.
Standard in Practice: 1.d
Reading Strategy: Thinking Maps, Guided Notes
Whole Group:
-Model Map and brainstorm topics with class on the white board. Students create their
own maps on the back of the guided notes.
-Watch the documentary, students will fill out at least 3 examples for each question.
1. Which character do you relate to? Why?
2. How is this school like Montbello?
3. How is this school different from Montbello?
(Stop the documentary when there is something obvious to add and model the comment on
the board.)
-Students are expected to find connections and turn in guided notes at the end of the day.

Reading Strategy: Thinking Maps, Guided Notes
Whole Group: Vision = the act or power of anticipating that which may come to be.
Essential Question for today: What is our class’s vision for our education and school?
Students finish watching documentary and answer two of the five questions in the bubble
map on vision.
1. What is your vision of the perfect school?
2. What is your vision for your perfect life?
3. What is your vision for the perfect principal?
4. What is your vision for Montbello?
5. If you were principal, what would you change?
