When you are looking for a particular program or area in which you want to acquire
knowledge or skills and you do not have a particular resource in mind, where do you start
your search? How do you go about finding what you need?
'2.3.1 Michael
5/18/2008 1:48:05 PM
I'm generally going to start with the resources that our Company has partnered with to
provide training since we are required to use those first. When it came to picking a place
to take my Masters, since I was completing it while working full time I needed some place
close by. Online learning hadn't really come into it's own yet. Also, I did my
5
undergraduate at Stevens so I was comfortable with it.
'2.3.2 David 5/18/2008 2:20:03 PM
I usually start with a general internet search. In terms of pratical skills I start at
MSDN.com or codeproject.com.
'2.3.3 Ankur 5/18/2008 7:18:47 PM
When i was in 8th standard, my father is inspired about engg. field. then i joined
Technical school. At that juncture, i was come across so many new Technologies. so I
decided to Go about Communcation line particularly Satellite Communication. I did my
Undergrad in Electronics and communication. now i Want to go further in Satellite
communication. so i check the course list of major universities and i found Stevens had
this kind of major.
But when i came here, i took course but minimum student requirement is not filled so they
just drop down the course. so i diverted my mind to the wireless communication.so here
also i found that my college also member of ieee. so i just joined so i can acquire
knowledge from ieee. also so many other site which helps in to find about this major.
I know one of the best site is www.google.com
anything you find out on this site.
'2.3.4 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:13:47 PM
I usually start by using a search engine on the internet and then I just look through the
results to see if I can find what I want.

Do you recall if you ever find IEEE sources when you do internet searches for classes
you're interested in taking?
'2.3.4.1.1 Fred F. 5/21/2008 8:49:55 PM
I don't recall finding any IEEE sources.
'2.3.5 Hardik 5/19/2008 12:00:20 PM
First, I search on online and then, find an appropriate article or book for it. Sometimes, I
look in to IEEE magazines also.

'2.3.5.1.1 Hardik 5/22/2008 2:46:58 PM
Yes. I have searched for couple of wireless classes to sign up and found it.
'2.3.6 Shylah 5/19/2008 12:16:33 PM
I use google a lot ;o)
I also navigate through the IEEE website so see if any of the Educations Partners offer the
class I'm looking to take.

'2.3.6.1.1 Shylah 5/21/2008 8:27:59 PM
I have never found IEEE sources when I do internet searches
'2.3.7 Jessica 5/19/2008 12:21:45 PM
I usually go to a search engine (primarily Google) and type the program or area I am
interested in. I look through different programs offered and through url links within
websites I usually find what I am looking for.

'2.3.7.1.1 Jessica 5/23/2008 9:06:14 AM
No I don't remember finding IEEE sources for courses. I see IEEE articles pop up mainly
when I type in engineering keywords such as antenna propagation or cluster tracking
'2.3.8 Jonathan
5/19/2008 1:06:43 PM
If I know what area I am looking to acquire new knowledge and skills in, I would typically
ask collegues who have experience in those areas if they could recommend a resource
they have used in the past. Otherwise, I would probably search the internet, starting with
a professional society that particular area might fall under.

I am not quite sure what you mean my IEEE sources, but if I take that to mean courses
supported by the IEEE and taught by external organizations (like the education partners
program) then no I do not remember seeing that. I have come across courses/seminars
run by the IEEE directly during internet searches.
'2.3.9 Fred L. 5/19/2008 3:16:20 PM
Google, or if I know someone who has some knowledge in the area of interest, I'll talk with
them.

No, I don't think I've ever had IEEE sources show up for course searches.
'2.3.10
Plamen
5/19/2008 7:15:41 PM
I usually start out with the biggest schools in the area to check about offerings of
particular programs and once I get an idea of the area I want to focus on, I go on to
research other possibilities. I have utilizied Yahoo! as a resource of finding local
universitites and colleges.

'2.3.12
Jeff

I start with a simple search of the internet. I type in a broad description of what I am
looking for and narrow down from there. I will then spend a lot of time verifying the
accuracy of the information.

articles when I am doing research for work. If I am looking for technical information,
IEEE comes up a lot.
'2.3.13
Kunal 5/20/2008 10:04:02 PM

I wonder how people learn about the IEEE Education Partners program. Do you think
there’s a wide awareness of the program among the IEEE members?
'2.4.1 Michael
5/18/2008 1:49:12 PM
I came across the program by chance after I had started by degree. The Stevens web site
included mention of a 10% discount for IEEE members and that certain caught my eye.
Other than that, I may never or learned about it. I suspect that is a view shared by many
others.
8
'2.4.2 David 5/18/2008 2:21:55 PM
I really have no idea how people learn about the program. I probably got an email about it
many years ago. Can't remember exactly.
'2.4.3 Ankur 5/18/2008 7:21:43 PM
As per my opinion this is very good program that ieee started. because it helps too many
people in Electrical and Electronics Field of Area. they share their publication also so many
program in studet member will participate. also you can build yours careers in Ieee
organization.

I did not find out about the program through IEEE. I found out about the program through
the graduate school I attended. They had a website that advertised which societies offer
discounts to tuition.
'2.4.8 Jonathan
5/19/2008 1:08:54 PM
The program was pretty well advertised on the IEEE web page, but I know from talking
with my colleagues that are IEEE members that not everyone is aware of it. Part of my
reason for joining the IEEE was the opportunities available through the education partners
program.
'2.4.9 Fred L. 5/19/2008 3:18:13 PM
It has been well publicized. I'm not very actively involved with the IEEE, but I do read the
Spectrum and other IEEE news articles. The Education Partners program is almost always
promoted.
'2.4.10
Plamen
5/19/2008 7:17:16 PM

How did you first learn about the IEEE Education Partners? Can you describe the path that
took you to the program?
'2.5.1 Michael
5/18/2008 1:50:17 PM
As I said earlier, it was luck. I stumbled across the program while on my school's web
site. At that point, I was sure to use it for any classes that were included in the program.
I only used it twice since I found that I didn't like online learning and wasn't very
successful at it.

5/21/2008 9:11:50 AM
That's interesting about the online learning. Why didn't you like it/not successful at it?
'2.5.1.1.1 Michael
5/21/2008 6:16:24 PM
The Web Campus classes at Stevens were not/are not very interactive. Essentially, you
work from a book and class notes and do homework. I have a hard time learning about
new topics from books. I do much better in a classroom setting where I can be walked
through something instead of reading the text book. I've always found this to be the
fact for me event from when I was a child. If I have to learn a new concept from a
book, I have a much harder time with it than if somebody can explain it to me and show
me. Also, when the learning is up to me, I have a hard time keeping my attention.
When home, I can easily drift off into something else.
'2.5.2 David 5/18/2008 2:23:02 PM
See last question. I think I went right to the University. I got billed the total amout the
first time and had to remind them of the program.
'2.5.3 Ankur 5/18/2008 7:26:18 PM
I found this Education program form Stevens Institute Techology. Because of that i came
across too many resources and programs, one of them is IEEE Education program in which
depending upon courses u took you will get gradution degree as well as discount on
courses too.

actually, In my undergrad, My prof. told me about that ieee Organization porvide
education of some courses. but when i came to My master degree, i learned some
courses who offers in my university.
Also They put Banner on Webcampus Courses offer By IEEEE.
'2.5.4 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:16:16 PM
I learned about the program through the IEEE website and my colleges's website. When I

I later looked through the website and checked out all the provider's websites and chose
Inquestra based on the price and program they offered
'2.5.7 Jessica 5/19/2008 12:27:19 PM
I learned about it through Stevens Inst. of Technology website. Their website had a section

IEEE was among the professional societies included.

I had been considering joining the IEEE after graduating from undergraduate school and
was researching memeber benefits on their web page. Since I was intending on continuing
my education while working full time, the education partners program was a big selling
point for joining the IEEE. In particular, I knew Drexel has a strong power engineering
program, which is an area I am interested in, so I liked that I could get a discounted rate
through the IEEE at that school.
'2.5.9 Fred L. 5/19/2008 3:19:54 PM

What do you consider to be “continuing education?”
Why did you decide to pursue some continuing education at the time you found IEEE
Education Partners?
For example, are you interested in pursuing an advanced degree? Did you need to learn a
particular skill for your job? Were you simply interested in the topic? Or something else?
'3.1.1 Michael
5/18/2008 1:51:57 PM
Continuing education is anything. It can be a one day class, a seminar or a degree
program.
I actually decided to pursue my graduate degree before I found the IEEE program. I
always had intended to get that degree, but took a few years off after starting work. I did
it for myself. Work didn't seem to care either way but the degree in Software Engineering
has been invaluable at work since.
'3.1.2 David 5/18/2008 2:31:17 PM
Masters and Doctoral work in ones chosen profession. Industry recognized certifications.
Was going to do it anyway. This aided on the positive side the decision to do it.
For my own professional development within my job and outside of it also.
'3.1.3 Ankur 5/18/2008 7:32:14 PM
Now i am graduate on may 22 2008. so i am no more member of IEEE as student. but i
will join this program as member. because it give so many information about the latest
technology and research papers. so i just want to job so i will know about particular skill
then i decided to take ieee program about that.
'3.1.4 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:18:54 PM
I think continuing education is any formal classes or trainning you take to increase your
12
knowledge.
I decided to continue my education because I figured it would help me find a job and there
were discounts both from IEEE and my employer.
'3.1.5 Shylah 5/19/2008 12:25:47 PM
I consider any course to be 'continuing education'.
I wanted to learn more about Business Analysis because I was thinking about changing
jobs.
'3.1.6 Jonathan
5/19/2008 1:15:08 PM
I consider continuing education to be any class/seminar/workshop beyond a basic level of
training or qualification that one pursues to advance his or her knowledge or skill set in a
particular area. I was already interested in pursuing an advanced degree when I found the
IEEE education program, and given the programs that were offered, it made sense for me
to take advantage.
'3.1.7 Fred L. 5/19/2008 3:26:34 PM
I'd say additional education after completion of a formal degree to maintain one's skills is
"continuing education". I generally don't consider pursuit of a new degree as "continuing"
education.
I was already pursuing another degree when I found the IEEE program. My decision to
pursue the Masters in EGMT degree was to help me transition into management. At the
time I was in a staff engineering position.
'3.1.8 Plamen
5/19/2008 7:21:46 PM
I consider a college degree to be a given these days, so I interpret "continuing education"
as going a step further an obtaining a graduate degree.
I had always been interested in explanding my knowledge base as I had interests in
various areas, therefore, I decided to pursue a Master's degree. I was intrigued by the
new possibilities that would be presented to me.
'3.1.9 Jessica 5/19/2008 9:21:05 PM
Continuing education consists of training either through classes, workshops or seminars to
continue expanding one's knowledge within their field.
I wanted to understand the fundamentals of system engineering for my job position. I
graduated with a B.S electrical engineering degree therefore did not have full
understanding of system engineering.

The IEEE Education Partners program has both traditional universities and colleges as well
as for-profit corporations. Tell me what you think about the quality of education that each of
these types of education providers offers. If you took a course through an academic
institution, did you consider a for-profit corporation? And visa versa. If you took a course
through one of the for-profit corporations, did you consider a college or university?

For a degree program, my only experience was with a traditional unversity and was
excellent. I know people that have completed programs at for profit institutions and they

the program first and then started looking for a place to take advantage of it but vice
versa, I had already found a school and subsequently found out about the availability of
this program.
In terms of quality of education, I'd have to say that I was frankly a bit disappointed about
the way online courses were conducted. My school wanted to expand its reach to students
all over the world that started offering courses that are just not suitable to be taught
online - I ended up being disadvantaged by taking such courses and would have preferred

I am a little skeptical of for-profit education providers because of reading articles about
these type of organizations offering courses only to cancel them and not refund money
or there are scams. Organizations such as University of Pheonix that have been around
for a long time seem more legitimate. It seems like they are focused on getting the
information continuation education attendees need for their job.

I feel for-profit providers are always looking at the bottom line to make the investors

buildings and educational infrastructure. I don't think a for-profit provider has that
money.

Did the fact that the education partner was available through IEEE have anything to do with

It did not. I didn't even know about the program when I applied for my degree. The IEEE

I went to a technical school - Stevens Institute of Technology, so most of the programs
offered would be more or less endorsed by IEEE, so I was not at all surprised that they did
so. I can't say that the IEEE was crucial to my decision making process or that provided
for an extra layer of confidence though. I trusted my prior experiences at the institution.

'3.5.7.1.1 Plamen
5/23/2008 2:30:41 PM
I can't really say I'm familiar with the other participants in the program, so I can't
comment on whether my opinion had changed - if anything, their participation in the
program would have worked in their favor.
'3.5.8 Jessica 5/19/2008 9:27:24 PM
No it did not factor into my decisions to take a course. It was an added bonus. Whether
IEEE was an education partner or not would not have influenced my decision to take
classes.
'3.5.9 Hardik 5/20/2008 9:15:43 AM
I think a student is more responsible to decide what he or she wants to be in future and
according to that, he or she plans while he studies. So the education partner can provide
right directions to perspective students and from that, students have to decide what they
want to do within this institution.

Ultimately, how important was the IEEE “brand” in helping you decide to use the
Education Partners program? To what extent did you have the impression that by their
inclusion in the program that IEEE somehow endorsed them as education providers?
'3.5.9.1.1 Hardik 5/22/2008 2:48:48 PM
It is very important because of IEEE's external and internal activities to provide a large
amount of knowledge to their members.

I felt IEEE and Drexel may have had a joint venture for engineering. Maybe that IEEE
had provided grants, etc to Drexel. To a moderate extent I think they endorsed Drexel.
'3.5.11
Robert 5/20/2008 12:59:14 PM
It was not important because if I didn't say this before I fell into the partnership. In other
words I started to take classes and then found out it was a IEEE partner. I then took the
online classes to get the 10% IEEE discount to save money. The online classes are good if
the student is willing to put the time into it. A good textbook is needed for online classes
to work. The online classes have to be well organized.

'3.8.1.1.1 Michael
5/21/2008 6:29:03 PM
That isn't surprising. At work I will think something is easy and intuitive but most
others can't figure them out. My opinions on application design don't seem to be
mainstream.
The biggest flaw in the page is the length of the page. It's a long scroll down to the
bottom. The provider information should probably be not presented at once. Instead,
some click would bring up a specific provider.
The next layout at the top can be a little hard on the eyes. Too many font sizes, colors,
italics, bolds, etc.
Also, the text section appears to be designed for 1024x768 screen resolution while the
provider data is designed for 800x600. In today's world, I think a build for 1024x768 is
safe, especially for the IEEE's technical audience. That may allow the provider
information to be presented more horizontally.

too much going on it gets confusing. I think the right links are posted in the right

than for the school links, have a link that accesses the IEEE area within the school

I think a broader array of academic institutions would be nice, since geographically you

Having completed a course through the IEEE Education Partners Program, how would you
rate these experiences:

--The ease of registration through the IEEE Education Partners Program?
35
--The quality of the course or courses?
'4.1.1 Michael

My experience was fantasic. Stevens runs a great program for working people. I didn't
register through the IEEE page. I had to submit my membership card to Stevens to get
my discount mailed to me. I'm not sure I could register through IEEE that long ago. The
quality of excellent with the execption of one class that was taught very poorly but you will
get the occasionally bad assistant professor.

i have no idea about the how program works in IEEE Education partners. but IEEE

they give some more information about the new technology too.

Well, I completed the process 18 months ago, so I don't recall everything in details - I
recall having to fill out multiple pages, which I think was the most tedious part about it if you can have everything listed on 1 page, it would make the whole process a lot
easier, in my opinion.

'4.1.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:09:19 PM
--The information and support provided by IEEE Education Partners about how the
program works? Neutral, I had to make a few calls to both the IEEE and the registrar at
Drexel to get the discount initially.
--The ease of registration through the IEEE Education Partners Program? I don't recall any
registration with the IEEE, just had to know a particular code word to provide Drexel. As I
said above, it wasn't very intuitive when I did it. Perhaps it's an improved process now.
--The quality of the course or courses? Course quality at Drexel is not very consistent and
it depends a lot on the Instructor. Often the materials are several years old with errors
and typos that haven't been corrected. They are constantly upgrading their WebCT and
content delivery methods. This generally results in an improved experience, but not
always. I don't get the impression that IEEE has ever audited any of these courses for
quality.

'4.3.7 Plamen

I think the program could be extended to apply to on-campus courses as well - at my
school, only certain online courses were qualified.
'4.3.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:18:05 PM
What would be really nice would be if the IEEE acted as a coordinator for all courses, and
allowed members to create customized degree programs combining courses from any/all
participating course providers. Not sure which school would grant the degree. Participants
could rate the various courses, so everyone would know which courses from which schools
were the best (and which ones to avoid). As it is, all the material about each school is just
advertising.
Even if the IEEE didn't try the above (I admit it's pretty unlikely it could be arranged), it
would be nice if they offered a rating system for participants to report their experiences
on. This would help everyone find the best courses to take.

Currently, the website is designed as a portal with different entrance points to details about
the programs offered by each education provider.
From what you recall when you first investigated the IEEE Education Partners Program, how
many of the education providers’ websites did you investigate? One? Two? All of them?
How did you decide which ones to look at further?

I don't recall visiting a website when I first started. This was about eight years ago. I
learned of the program from the institution.
'4.5.2 David 5/18/2008 5:41:23 PM
Only one.
I didn't use the website.
'4.5.3 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:37:37 PM
I only looked at the one since I had already chossen a university before I found out about
the IEEE program.
'4.5.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:07:21 AM
i investigated mostly the universities because i was student at that time. also i went from
the ranking of schools and area too. because i am international student.
mostly i prefer the go for course in which student or pursuers are interested.

reputation (or my impression of it at least) in the field of electric power engineering and
their graduate programs in that field.

OK, I have answered this question so many times until now but I guess, I'd have to do it
again:
I looked at one particular education provider based on prior experience.
'4.5.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:32:56 PM
Originally I only looked at the Drexel link. I have since looked at several of the other
schools, but as I am already in the Drexel program this is just for curiosity.
41
'4.5.9 Jeff
5/20/2008 12:36:17 PM
I looked at two. Those were the ones local to me.
'4.5.10

I only looked at One. I look for the partners with a well known name.
'4.5.11
Jessica 5/20/2008 3:19:49 PM
I investigated 2 of the education providers. I was set on going to Stevens however I went
to RIT's website just to check it out. I know RIT is a good engineering school which was
why I looked into the school's website

I have visited a few education providers on this website. I would say three. I had decided
to navigate from their introduction on the home page. i don't want to check if it doesn't fall
in my criteria such as courses, distance from my home, popularity, etc.

What suggestions can you give to improve how the IEEE Education Partners Program
website is organized?
'4.6.1 Michael
5/18/2008 2:15:52 PM
The page is very long. people might not get to the bottom when making descisions.
Perhaps some kind of breadcrumb to make sure people will get to the bottom of the page?
'4.6.2 David 5/18/2008 5:41:42 PM
Seems well organized.
'4.6.3 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:38:15 PM
I would add a search feature so that you could look for schools or courses in your area.
'4.6.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:10:20 AM
as per my opinion, i am not able to give this answer because there are more intelligent
people working in this program.
but still i want to say that all education providers give the information about this course.

'4.6.6 Jonathan

streamline the site more.
'4.6.7 Plamen

Again, answered in previous question:
42
Make a list of all providers and link to a specially tailored section of that institution.
'4.6.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:34:29 PM
It would be nice to see a list of programs/courses available by name, then see which
institutions offer them.
'4.6.9 Jeff
5/20/2008 12:36:45 PM

I think they should use more vibrant and seasonal colors to attract more and more people
on their website. Instead of big boxes for different education partners information, they
should assign different pop up or pull down tab to list education partners. I also
recommendate to list them as state wise, so people from different states can surf pages
according to their needs. They also can use some flash pictures such as students
mingling, facilities in libraries, meeting halls, historical buildings, etc. around different
colleges and universities to make website more live and interesting.

One of the features that is planned or the new website is a search function that will allow
you to find the types of courses that you want. What are some of the search fields you
would find most helpful—the ones that would help you narrow your search to just the kinds
of classes that you are interested in taking?
'4.7.1 Michael

One of the challenges with marketing the IEEE Education Partners program is the sheer
volume of information that members receive, both from IEEE, other organizations,
businesses and anyone else with a message or product.
44
Where would you EXPECT to find information about the IEEE Education Partners Program?
Where would you look?
Since you are familiar with the program—and obviously found it in order to participate—
what ideas do you have for the BEST way to break through the “clutter” and get the
message out that this program is available to IEEE members?
'5.1.1 Michael
5/18/2008 2:18:15 PM
IEEE web site, mailed and email communications. Sections should put it in the newletters.
Targeted communications on this topic. Emails specific to the program. Promiennt
placement in sections newsletters and society publications.
'5.1.2 David 5/18/2008 5:44:43 PM
Direct email is the most effective. Also maybe prominent links on the institutions web site.
Target people you know may be already interested in continuing education.
'5.1.3 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:40:21 PM
I would expect to find it in the IEEE publication like the magazines and journal.
'5.1.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:27:29 AM
i would suggest that almost each and every search engine find about the university on
search engine you will represent the the special has location that search engine suggest
this program. also front of ieee website you guys have to put add.
many parents and students are finding about the university ranking form usnews and
some other website on that put add so they will know about this program and this society.
'5.1.5 Shylah 5/19/2008 1:04:14 PM
I would expect the information to be at the top-center of the web-page. I have to look
through the webpage to fins what I'm looking for...
Send a letter with the membership renewal. Have a link on every society's web-site
'5.1.6 Jonathan
5/19/2008 2:03:05 PM
I am a fan of how the website advertises the 10% discount right up front. This is the most
important part for getting most people (myself included) to consider the opportunities
provided, since everyone is looking to save money. Also, I would expect to find what is
offered in a list, categorized by the type of opportunity (ie. academic, seminar, etc.)
'5.1.7 Plamen
5/19/2008 8:07:38 PM
There are 2 places where it pretty much seems obvious to me - the institutions involved
and the enrollment page for IEEE membership.
'5.1.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:46:55 PM
Advertisements in the various IEEE publications worked for me. With all the new
electronic delivery formats this should be straightforward. Advertising by the partner
institutions in other non-IEEE trade publications would reach more members who might no
pay attention to the IEEE pubs. Last, send a notification along with the annual
membership info packet publicizing member benefits, including this one.
'5.1.9 Jeff
5/20/2008 12:39:48 PM
The emails are a good method. Partnership mailing could help. I throw away mail directly
45
from universities because it is advertisements. It is comes from IEEE, I generally read it.
A mail should have the IEEE logo with the universities. Then I can direct myself to the
website and read more.
'5.1.10
Robert 5/20/2008 1:36:46 PM
I would look on the web first.
I would send emails to the members.
'5.1.11

I find that posting the information about IEEE Education Partners Program in school
websites is most useful. Then within those website direct people to the Education Partners
website. When a person is looking through school website they are interested in continuing
their education which is not something IEEE can determine.
'5.1.12

Think back to the last business-related marketing message that really got your attention.
Perhaps it was something that you weren’t even particularly interested in, but for some
reason it stood out and made you look or read to find out more.
What was the product or message? What made it stand out and command your attention?
Can IEEE use any of the ideas you learned from this to market the IEEE Education Partners
Program?
'5.2.1 Michael
5/18/2008 2:21:09 PM
I don't think anybody does marketing better than apple computer. The mac, iPhone, iPod
commercials are wonderful and the Apple website is clean and wonderful.
Mind you consumer products a very different animal than this program, but it is all about
catching the eye. The biggest weapon the program has to catch somebodies eye is the
discount. I know it is shallow, but it is true. That will make people look more.
'5.2.2 David 5/18/2008 5:46:04 PM
Probably that "Dude" comercial for bud-light. It was funny. Humor works the best for me.
'5.2.3 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:43:01 PM
I can not think of any since I just delete most of the junk email I get a few TV ads have
gotten my attention but I don't think they would work well for IEEE.
'5.2.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:32:35 AM
As i know you guys used that information that i will got 10% discount on my course. but
46
you will not provide enough information about that.
as i know IEEE gives this discount on each course so i have to find out on IEEE site. but its
not true,
i am taking this course on this education providers and they will give me the discount on
my each of this course. give some step so they will know about that because some people
understand that IEEE gives this discount on course so they have to submit the information
to IEEE.
any other i do not know because i do not know much about marketting.
'5.2.5 Shylah 5/19/2008 1:06:37 PM
Telus Christmas commercial.
It would be a great idea for IEEE to advertise on buses, subways, and on T.V.

'5.2.6 Jonathan

I can't think of a specific example, but marketing messages I find the most attractive are
simple and to the point. They emphasize what the program can do for me.
'5.2.7 Plamen
5/19/2008 8:12:47 PM
I generally don't like marketing very much but every once in a while, I do encounter an ad
that really grabs my attention. But it has to be extreme. I can think of a few DO NOTs
right now - the PC vs. Mac commercial or the moronic ads presented by "common people",
which are supposed to be relatable to such - both extremely annoying to me. I guess
what could be taken from these unsuccessful ads, in my opinion, (also the Comcast vs.
Verizon ones) is not to go for the cheap and obvious.
'5.2.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 9:00:14 PM
While looking at some resumes for a position I have open in my group, I happened on one
that wasn't a fit for my opening, but the persons skills were really what I needed for
another position that I hadn't yet opened.
If you can show engineers that they need to take advantage of the partners program to be
successful, they will.

b) Saying something outrageous and not expected.

IEEE is considering a marketing program that uses a “tag line” or “slogan” to promote the
IEEE Education Partners Program. The line is:
“The Power of 10.”
When you first read “The Power of 10,” what did you think it was about?
'5.3.14
Robin - Moderator
5/21/2008 12:32:10 PM
The slogan refers to the 10% discount on education programs for IEEE members.
Obviously, the campaign relies on the discount as a major selling point.
What do you think of the focus on the discount?
For you, is there a better or more compelling selling point for the program?
'5.3.14.1 Hardik 5/21/2008 1:19:54 PM
Yes, it is pretty enough discount on webcampus courses. I don't see any better discount
or any great scheme to sell this program.
'5.3.14.2 Kunal 5/21/2008 6:03:18 PM
I also believe that 10% discount attracts lots of students.
'5.3.14.3 Michael
5/21/2008 6:31:59 PM
While the discount will bring people in, an idealist would say that the focus should be on
personal improvement and now the money one might be able to save.
'5.3.14.4 David 5/21/2008 7:25:28 PM
It seems appropriate.
I guess not. You may want to emphasize that it is a IEEE membership benefit and it has
been a very important one to me.
'5.3.14.5 Fred L. 5/21/2008 7:51:51 PM
I think many engineers are probably getting tuition reimbursement, so the 10% may not
be a big selling point. I also noticed that Purdue doesn't give 10% if you are taking
classes for credit...not much advantage there. For me, a bigger selling point is what the
various curriculums offered can do for my career. If the IEEE would pre-screen programs
and provide something like a "Good Housekeeping seal of approval" guarantee, that
would definitely be a strong selling point. Being able to share experiences between
members is another plus that could distinguish the IEEE program. Currently, there's no
48
real incentive to use the IEEE site as opposed to just Googling what you want and going
directly to the providers' sites. That's pretty much where you end up any how. The 10%
is a bonus if you choose a school in the program, but I doubt the 10% will be a big factor
in the decision.
'5.3.14.6 Shylah 5/21/2008 8:38:29 PM
I was more inclined to register because of the 10% ...so I think it's a good idea to focus
on it
'5.3.14.7 Fred F. 5/21/2008 8:56:23 PM
I like the idea of playing up the discount since that is the main reason I joined IEEE
orgianlly.
'5.3.14.8 Robert 5/21/2008 11:23:12 PM
I think that is a very good selling point.
There are actually two good selling points.
1) 10% discount.
2) IEEE endorses the partner.
'5.3.14.9 Jeff
5/23/2008 7:05:40 AM
The discount is a great selling point. The only problem with the 10% discount for me is
that I do not see the discount. My company pays for my education and the 10% is taking
off upfront, so when I submit the bill to my company they pay the reduced rate. I think
this may be true for most people because today many medium to large companies pay
for education
It would be great if we could get 10% of the books as well. I do not get reimbursed for
them.
'5.3.14.10 Jessica 5/23/2008 9:26:59 AM
No there is not a better or more compelling selling point. With tuition getting more
expensive every year, getting a 10% discount is a major selling point. Its difficult for
adults who are going after continuing education to cover the tuition because many are
not full-time students therefore don't qualify for many of the scholarships or grants. As a
result, tuition is a big factor and a major selling point for IEEE Education Partners
Program.
'5.3.14.11 Barbara
5/23/2008 12:24:52 PM
We are a society motivated by making money and saving money.
For me, the long-term benefits of enhancing my knowledge and skills are more
important. Not sure how one would market that.
Some of the classes are, well, pricey. A 10% discount is nice, but employer
reimbursement of the class is nicer. Not sure how one would market that either.
'5.3.14.12 Plamen
5/23/2008 2:52:55 PM
I think the focus on the discount is right on the money - I recall having to rank the
different features of the program and the 10% discount was my top consideration, so you
are on the right track. Therefore, I don't think there's a better or a more compelling
selling point.
'5.3.14.13 Ankur 5/23/2008 8:13:50 PM
That true,it is major selling point. But if you markettinf by proper way like if the university
and company told their students and employees that they offer new technology and they
49
also they are giving discount offers.
aslo Send the mails to the shoools about this program so they can know about this
program in schools. also tehy can help in subject also knowleadge wise too.
'5.3.14.14 Jonathan
5/24/2008 5:40:26 PM
The 10% discount is probably the biggest selling point (after finding a course I wanted to
take) and I think this is most likely true for others as well. I might been a little harsh on
the slogan...I like the focus being put on the discount.
'5.3.1 Michael
5/18/2008 2:22:29 PM
Took me too long to figure out what it meant. I think it is talking about the discount. I
don't think a slogan should reference the discount. Marketing materials can certainly bring
it to the forefront, but the slogan should be about the value it bring to the indiviuals life,
not the wallet.
'5.3.2 David 5/18/2008 5:47:05 PM
I guess that refers to the discount? Kind of catchy but doesn't relay represent anything
concrete.
'5.3.3 Fred F. 5/18/2008 11:44:43 PM
I did not really think of anything but I would not have thought it was about an education
program.
'5.3.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:37:08 AM

something give the information about new technology.

Well, it does have a math ring to it and I'm not sure how successful that would be among
the majority of people out there who hate math. I think "The Power of 10 Percent" sounds
better and clearer.
'5.3.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 8:54:00 PM
Didn't really evoke anything in particular. Let's not forget we're dealing with engineers
here. I don't think an advertising campaign based on tag lines is going to go too far.
Engineers are very practical. You need to actually provide them some advantage to using
the IEEE program. "If you build it, they will come" sort of thing. But there needs to be
some value-added aspect that's real, not rhetoric.

I think having the universities tell its students about the program is a big help and having
businesses offer it to their employes would not hurt either.
'5.5.4 Ankur 5/19/2008 8:39:42 AM
Just do marketing properly form website, also tell the universities
to advertise of that when the freshers are coming in their college.

I have no advice

Place a link on the IEEE homepage. Better yet, an icon or something that advertises the
program. The webpage for the program is kind of hard to find.

I did just find the link after closer searching. I think making it more visible would still
help.

Keep the program going and try to look for areas of expansion that would present more
possibilities for IEEE members.
'5.5.8 Fred L. 5/19/2008 9:01:58 PM
Get quality programs. Publicize success stories. Let members rate programs. Provide

value to members.

Advertising in the IEEE Spectrum could help. I have not noticed ads in that magazine.
Many young engineers are going for their degrees. We have to go for it to keep up with
everyone else. A little advertising will catch our attentions.

Also, have the universities talk it up more.

I would suggest that you make sure the textbooks are good and that you can learn from
them. Basically taking classes online you need a strong textbook with examples. The one
thing that a traditional classroom setting has if that you get to here the inflection of the
teacher voice plus the real-world life examples that are given.
The classes online must be really organized and the instructor needs to continually remind
the students of the work ahead so they can plan for it.

I think more outreach should be done to other schools, even prestigious schools such as
University of Pennsylvania to offer tuition discounts for continuing education.

I guess ... to remind people how fast technology changes (like they need reminding)... and
in order to keep up... they need to educate.

Not any.
