Words of Wisdom Confucius lived through the lack of decency, civility, and ethics in the chaos of the Period of Disunion and worked for change. His philosophy was the basis for the training and for the exhaustive examinations to become a scholar-official. Your time of training in River Vale schools is nearly over as you will begin the chaotic transition to high school. Today grants the opportunity to leave your enduring philosophical legacy. After nearly three years in Holdrum you have become an expert in its inner workings and have valuable experience and advice to offer those students who soon graduate from Woodside and Roberge Schools. This is a unique opportunity to offer these students your wisdom about Holdrum’s society in the manner of Confucius. STEP 1: Please examine the list of quotes from Confucius and interpret their possible meanings. Select one quote as a template to offer advice for students on how to succeed at Holdrum academically and socially. Use your invaluable experiences to enlighten! EXAMPLE: “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Confucius You will face many challenges at Holdrum but even the most difficult tasks, exams, and courses have purpose and meaning. Embrace these challenges and see the beauty in learning. STEP 2: In a well written paragraph, you will explain how your time at Holdrum would have changed if you were told these words of wisdom on your first day of sixth grade (this is to be done on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to your larger paper). STEP 3: Once your quote has been crafted in the spirit of Confucius, the fun begins! You will create a template for a woodblock printer so that your wisdom can be shared with the masses. The Confucian quote and your own philosophical quote must be written as neatly/beautifully as possible, a border should be designed to add visual appeal, and you need to use some Chinese Calligraphy in the form of a key symbol (for wisdom?) or perhaps even writing the year in Chinese. Please remember that in order to be printed properly, all writing must be backwards! Good luck and have fun! DUE DATE: Monday, February 24, 2014 (with rubric!!!)
