Chapter 1: Introducing Earth (pgs. 4-9) Lesson 1.1: The Earth’s Systems The Earth’s system depends on the SUN & These 4 parts: atmosphere geosphere biosphere hydrosphere System: A group of parts that work together. Energy: The ability to do work. (SUN) Atmosphere: The thin layer of gases the make the Earth’s outermost (top) layer. Geosphere: Inside layers of the Earth Hydrosphere: The system that contains all of the Earth’s water. Biosphere: The system of the Earth that contains living things. (plants & animals) + = Chapter 1.1: The Earth System (pgs. 4-9) Force: A natural power that interacts with an object EXAMPLES: A hammer pounding on a nail. A tornado touching the ground. (non-natural force) (natural force) Constructive Force: - A force that BUILDS-UP the Earth’s surface by 2 of Earth’s plates pushing together. - Creates mountains earthquakes, volcanoes *Construct = builds things Destructive Forces: - Forces that Destroy & wear away / moves land apart - Land shape changes by weathering /erosion (natural things): like wind, water, heat. *Destructive = breaks things Name:__________________________ Vocabulary Quiz: Date:_______________ Chapter 1.1 :The Earth System DIRECTIONS: Match the vocabulary term with its definition by writing the letter of the correct definition in the right column on the line beside the term in the left column. 1)______ geosphere A. A group of parts that work together as a whole 2)______ atmosphere B. Forces that wear down, or destroy, landmasses 3)______ constructive force C. Earth’s metal core, solid middle layer, & outer rocky layer 4)______ system D. The part of the Earth that contains living things 5)______ destructive force E. The sphere that contains all of Earth’s water 6)______ hydrosphere F. The thin envelope of gasses forming the Earth’s outermost layer 7)______ energy G. Forces that construct, or build up, mountains 8)______ biosphere H. The ability to do work Name:__________________________ TEST STUDYGUIDE: Date:_______________ Chapter 1.1 :The Earth System STUDYGUIDE KNOW THE FOLLOWING VOCABULARY TERMS: constructive force mesosphere outer core crust iron destructive force lithosphere inner core basalt geology/geologist pressure athenosphere mantle granite LOCATE THE FOLLOWING ON A DIAGRAM: outer core athenosphere crust lithosphere inner core mesosphere mantle * Know which order these layers are from inside out & outside into the center. BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN/GIVE INFO ABOUT: * Know this about each layer of the Earth: - layers is made from, (rock metal) - their temperature (warm, cold, molten) - state if they are solid or liquid and explain why - the 2 layers that make up the whole mantle, and what each important job they have to keep the Earth moving. - What happens to both the temperature and pressure of the Earth the deeper we travel inside.
