Beowulf: Creative Project Options In order to demonstrate your comprehension of the legendary story, you must choose one of the following final project options. The ultimate goal is to show understanding of the plot, characters, symbols, themes, and setting in a creative way. Project #1. . .MARK IT! A Set of Bookmarks Design a set of 6 bookmarks with a picture on 1 side and written support on the other side explaining the picture. Written supports must be at least 50 words each. Bookmarks must be at least 8x3 inches. You must include words and phrases (in quotation marks) from the text for support. There will be a bookmark for 3 main characters, main setting, basic plot summary, and favorite event. Project #2 . . . BOOK JACKET Design a new book jacket for Beowulf. The jacket will include a cover with title and creative use of images, information on the main characters, a summary of the parts we read (100-300 words), a blurb (7-20 words), and your opinion of the story (50-100 words). Don’t forget about the back cover and inside flaps. The book jacket will be no larger than an 8x11 sheet of paper (no poster board!). Project #3 . . . KENNINGS COLLAGE Identify at least 10 kennings from Beowulf. On a standard size sheet of paper, make a collage of pictures and words expressing these kennings. On the back, explain the kennings: identify the kenning; identify what it means; identify which page and line each kenning can be found; identify which translation each kenning comes from (text = Burton Raffel translation; handouts = Seamus Heaney translation) Project #4 . . . CHARACTER THEME SONGS Find popular music lyrics to use as theme songs for the following characters: Beowulf, Hrothgar, Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the Dragon, Wiglaf. Each character will have 1 song that represents him/her/it. In a paragraph, explain how each song represents its character. Include quotes from the song and the story as support. Along with the paragraphs, you must turn in copies of the lyrics including song title and artist. ****All work must be original. Plagiarized work will be reported and result in a grade of zero.**** All work is expected to be of high quality.
