Jack/Piggy/Ralph, burdened by unaccustomed insights into his past/human nature/how to hunt, calls another meeting. As darkness falls, and the boys discuss their fear of Jack/the beast/the parachutist, the assembly disintegrates into chaos. To Roger’s/Jack’s/Piggy’s distress, Ralph considers giving up the leadership/conch/glasses. An injured parachutist/rescue party/dead parachutist drops onto the island; Ralph and Jack/Sam and Eric/Roger and Simon, tending the fire, see it and believe that they are about to be rescued/have seen the beast/have seen a ghost. Jack and Ralph lead a search to find the beast, leaving Piggy with the littluns/alone/with the parachutist. The hunt goes on after darkness falls and the group is terrified into flight by the boar/pig/corpse.
