The Irish Society's Nursery Unit October Newsletter Autumn is a lovely time of the year for children to learn about nature. It is important to encourage our children to appreciate nature and what happens to plant and animal life in autumn. Why not bring your child on a country walk? Talk to them about trees shedding their leaves, animals going into hibernation, typical autumn weather and the darker mornings and evenings. This month we will be providing various activities which will help them understand nature. We will be taking walks around the school grounds to observe the changes in nature and we will collect some leaves to laminate for our hall display. Please feel free to read the monthly planning which is on display on the Parents Notice Board in the hall. This will inform you about our theme of autumn and our mini-theme of Harvest. November During November we plan to have the theme of People Who Help Us. This includes a wide and varied range of people. If you or anyone you know works in this sector we would love you to come and talk to and show the children what you do, even if it was just for 15 minutes. From firemen to crossing patrol people and hairdressers to policemen, children in previous years have really enjoyed these visits. If you would like to come in and speak to our children and bring some equipment associated with your job, please let us know. Colour Table and Nature Zone Each month we have a colour or colours associated with our monthly themes. As this month's themes are autumn and Harvest, our colours are BROWN and ORANGE. We would love the children to be spotting these colours at home with you and perhaps bringing in an item, clearly named, for our interest table. This is a great opportunity to link home and Nursery learning. Please try not to bring in plastic items. Some ideas include an orange, pumpkin, make a brown and orange collage, some brown dough you have made. In other words, something the children can investigate. For our Nature Zone this month, we would love the children to bring in one item that relates to Harvest and Autumn. Exceptional Closure Day The Nursery Unit and Primary School will be closed on Friday 3rd October 2014 for an Exceptional Closure Day. Half Term Break The Nursery Unit will be closed from Monday 27th October until Friday 31st October 2014 for half term. The nursery unit will reopen on Monday 3rd November 2014. Birthdays Morning Session Jenson 25th Afternoon Session Yasemin 2nd Oliver C 10th Will 17th Daniel D-S 22nd Please!! We have a few requests to make this month: Please ensure your child's clothes are all clearly named. 52 children attend the Nursery Unit daily, all wearing identical jumpers and polo shirts!! If a child removes their sweatshirt we always remind them to put it in their tidy box, but they do not always make it there! It would be very helpful to staff if there is a full change of clothes on your child's peg everyday. Children may have toileting accidents or simply soak their clothes while playing in the water tray! This bag can be hung on their peg and left there. A reminder of the time of Nursery sessions: Morning - doors open 8.55am and again at 11.25am Afternoon - doors open at 12.25pm and again at 2.55pm Please could all parents/grandparents/childminders be on time to collect children. It is so important at this stage of the year that children do not think that no one is coming for them. This can set your child back in their settling in period. Please note that you are not permitted to drive into the school grounds. Please make all collectors aware of this as often it is grandparents and friends who do not realise that this is not allowed! Please send in a named flower pot as we will be planting spring bulbs during this month. Going home time can be a busy time period. Often the children may see you coming into the classroom and try and leave the story room. If we do not see you we will continue to keep your child in the story room. Due to our collecting procedure, we would like you to come right up to the story room door. Please remember that there are 52 children who attend the nursery unit. At this stage we are still becoming familiar with approximately 200 adults who are collecting the children. If you are not here on a regular basis, please do not be offended if we ask you who you are here to collect! If your child has an accident which requires first aid, toileting accident or needs to change their clothes we shall complete a form which must be signed by a parent or person with parental responsibility. If you do not collect your child from nursery, we shall photocopy the form and send it home with the collector. Please read, sign and return this form to keep our records correct.
