Night – Finding Examples to Support Themes
In order to prepare for our first formal essay, in this assignment you will practice finding examples and pulling
quotations from the text that show a particular theme.
 For each theme, find four examples from the book.
 In each box, explain the example from the book in your own words and include the quotation from the book
using MLA Citation that shows this example.
This project is due on Tuesday, December 4 and is worth 25-points.

Cruelty
Example 1: Elie
experiences kindness
when the young French
girl comforts him after
he has been severely
beaten by Idek.

Quote 1: “I felt a cool
hand wiping the blood
from my forehead. It
was the French girl. She
was smiling her
mournful smile as she
slipped me a crust of
bread” (Wiesel 53).

me up Elie because he
was venting his fury
and Elie was crossing
his way. After he beat
up Elie, he sent him
back to work as if he
didn’t just brutally beat
him to death
Quote 1: “He threw
Example 2: Elie
witnessed little children
even babies being sent
to the crematorium,
some were dead and
some were alive. How
could people just had
loads of trucks to kill
children because of
their race, that’s
cruelty.

Quote 2: “A truck drew
close and unloaded its
hold: small children.
Babies! Yes, I did see
this, with my own eyes
. . . children thrown
into the flames” (Wiesel
32).

he lost his hope on

life for him and she is

She was kind enough
to clean him up and
feed him. She spoke
perfect German to Elie.

Loss of Faith
Quote 1: “He recited
entire pages from the
Talmud, arguing with
himself, asking and
answering himself
endless questions. One
day, he said to me: its
over. God is no longer
with us” (Wiesel 76).

beginning of the book
Elie says his dad is very
cultural and basically
doesn’t have time for
anything.

why should I bless
Him? In every fiber, I
rebelled. Because He
had had thousands of
children burned in his
pits? Because He kept
six crematories working
night and day, on
Sundays and feast
days? Because on His
great might…” (Weisel
64).
Quote 1: “My father
was a cultured man,
rather unsentimental.
He rarely displayed his
feelings, not even
within his family, and
was more involved with
the welfare of others
with that of his own
kin” (Wiesel 4).
the other prisoners
were forced to
watch young pipel
get hanged. Pipel
was an only child
and that hurt Elie
to such an atrocity.

Example 1: Elie’s
Example 2: Elie is
looking out for his
father so the SS
officers don’t take his
dying father away and
be with the corpses or
maybe to the
crematorium. Elie
knows his father is
tried but doesn’t want
him to rest at this
specific area but at the
rooms.
Quote 2: “Father I
said, you cannot say
here. I pointed to the
corpses around him;
they too had wanted to
rest here. I se my son.
I do see them. Let
them sleep. They
haven’t closed and eye
for so long (Wiesel
105).

Example 3: Elie’s

father is giving Elie
protection because he
knew it was maybe his
time to go soon. The
knife was Elie’s father
protection from other
people who tried to eat
him. The spoon maybe
was for eating or to dig
his way out of the
camps if his dad wasn’t
there with him.

Quote 3: “Here, take
this knife, he said I
won’t need it anymore.
You may find it useful.
Also take this spoon.
Don’t sell it. Quickly!
Go ahead, take what
I’m giving you!”
(Wiesel 75).
Example 3: His father

got beaten for not
putting fort effort in
working. As the days
and months go by
people start to age and
get lazy and loose
strengths. Elie’s father
was at that stage and
he couldn’t put effort in
working strong.

Quote 3: “You old
loafer! He starting
yelling. Is this what you
call working? And he
began beating him with
an iron bar” (Wiesel
54).
Example 3: Elie lost

faith in his self because
he couldn’t save his
father from dying. He
thought he could do it
but he failed. He woke
up the next morning to
see that his father
wasn’t in the bunk
below him and
someone else was.

Quote 3: "It's too
late to save your
old father, I said to
myself..."(Weisel
105).
Example 3: Elie is
protecting his father
from getting taken by
the gravediggers
because they tried to
take him. Elie’s father
is very ill so they
thought he was dead
because he wouldn’t
wake up. Elie wants his
dad alive as long as
possible so they could
end together.

Quote 3: “Father!
Father! Wake up.
They’re going to
throw you outside . .
. His body remained
inert. The two
gravediggers had
grabbed me by the
neck: leave him
alone. Can’t you see
he’s dead? No! I
yelled. He’s not
dead! Not
yet!”(Wiesel 99).
