Emergency Management Collection Assessment Submitted by Doug Taylor May, 2009 INTRODUCTION Following guidelines established by the WLN Collection Assessment Service, which provide a framework for evaluating a library's current holdings and the level of activity of the collection development, the Emergency Management collection is rated an overall 3cP. This level supports all courses of undergraduate study and master's degree programs as well as the more advanced independent study needs of the patrons of public and special libraries. Refer to the Emergency Management conspectus sheets and checklist analysis for a more detailed examination of the library's holdings. HOLDINGS The Emergency Management collection contains 7,943 titles in the Library of Congress classification scheme: GB5000-GB5030 HC79.D45 HD49; HD61 HV551.2-HV639 HV6429-HV6433 QE521-QE613.5 RA1-RA1270 RC86-RC216 TA495 UA926-UA929 This number includes 299 e-books. In comparison, the previous assessments had 6,497 titles. Since the last assessment 7366 titles were withdrawn from the collection as out-of-date materials. Since the previous assessments, expenditures in this area totaled $1,364,089.37 and 1,446 new titles have been added comprising 18.2% of the current Emergency Management collection. It refers to menu options on the Library or institution's homepage, etc., which link the user to owned or remotely accessed electronic resources selected by the Library with the needs of its patrons in mind. Because the Library provides access to electronic databases, e-books and integrates quality web sites that encompasses the area of Emergency Management the Library's electronic collection in this subject is rated a 3cP (Advance Study or Instructional Support Level; Primary language). 10 SUMMARY: Strengths: Total holdings, WLN conspectus evaluation and checklist comparisons indicate the overall Emergency Management collection is more than adequate to support the curriculum. Of particular note are the holdings in the subject areas of: Business, Social Work and Criminal Justice. The Emergency Management call number range, HV551.2 – HV639, has had 226 new titles added since the last assessment which is a 60% increase. The following bibliographies also show a strong growth in our Emergency Management collection: Best Books for Academic Libraries, 51.6%, Best Books for Academic Libraries (Supplement), 50.4%, and American Reference Book Annual, 33.8%. A review of the journal holdings reveals that the Emergency Management collection is adequate to support the curriculum. Magazines for Libraries show a healthy holdings rate of 35.5%. Numerous print/electronic indices show a strong journals rate of 57.2% that are either in print or accessible through databases. Weaknesses: Total holdings, WLN conspectus evaluations, and checklist comparisons indicate that the weakest areas of the Emergency Management Collection are: Natural Disasters (GB5000 – GB5030); Geology (QE521 – 613.5); Nursing (RA1 – 1270 and RC86 – 216). Recommendations: Although the monographic collection continues to be strong and the serials holdings have grown in strength sufficiently to support the Institute for Emergency Preparedness Emergency Management program at the 3c level additional monographs in the area of Emergency Management need to be collected particularly in the Natural Disasters and Technology areas. 11 Appendix Emergency Management E-Books Call Number GB5010 .P59 2002eb GB5014 .M3964 2002eb HC79.D45 B46 2004 HD49 .B365 2001eb HD49 .B367 2003eb HD49 .R47 2004eb HD61 .A48 2002eb HD61 .J67 2003eb HD61 .A94 2003eb HD61 .C545 2002eb HD61 .F726 2003eb HD61 .G35 2003eb HD61 .H86 2003eb HV551.5.D44 B85 2003eb HV553 .D4713 2001eb Title Natural disasters and energy policy [electronic resource] : a summary of the Forum on Natural Disasters and Energy Policy, June 12, 2001, Washington, DC : a summary / to the Natural Disasters Roundtable by Rutherford H.
