Electronic Engineering student to study at Cambridge
MSc graduate at the School of Engineering, Mr Jonathan Parker, leaves for Cambridge
University in England later this year to study for a PhD.
Parker, who completed his BSc Electronic Engineering degree summa cum laude in
2010, conducted research in the field of computer vision with the focus on the analysis
of biological cell images. He hopes his work will have positive implications for research
into cell biology.
He will conduct further research at Cambridge into computer vision and artificial
intelligence under the supervision of Professor Roberto Cipolla.
Parker said he thoroughly enjoyed his studies at UKZN although a lot of hard work and
sacrifice was involved. In particular, he was grateful for the interaction with UKZN’s
academics who provided him with the necessary support and also stretched him to
develop his skills and knowledge.
His high level of personal and academic achievement won him the prestigious Skye
Cambridge Scholarship which will fund his studies overseas.
Parker says he intends returning to UKZN either for post-doctoral studies or to take up a
position as an academic.
