TRUSTS AND FOUNDATIONS MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION Background Aldeburgh Music is an international performance centre with education and artist development at its heart. Founded in 1948 by the leading British composer Benjamin Britten, the Aldeburgh Festival quickly became not only an international music festival but somewhere that the most talented young and established musicians could be inspired to achieve greater things. Backed by Arts Council England, following our £16m expansion we aim to make Aldeburgh Music the national centre of excellence for the development of musicians, providing support to musicians from age 8 years up to the leading musical figures of the day. In recent years we completed the largest phase of a major capital expansion, opening the Hoffmann Building adjacent to Snape Maltings Concert Hall. With its four studios, office space and social areas, it is a fantastic addition to the creative campus at Snape Maltings. This campus is unrivalled in the music world – four performance spaces, fifteen smaller studios, extensive ancillary facilities including offices, and social areas, devoted year-round to nurturing artistic talent of all ages. Job Description Aldeburgh Music’s Fundraising Department is responsible for generating all of the organisation’s private sector income: trusts and foundations, individual giving, the Friends organisation, corporate sponsorship and advertising. This position is focussed on a very important aspect of our arts fundraising. Responsible to: Head of External Relations The job Aldeburgh Music makes many applications to Trusts and Foundations to achieve an annual basic target of circa £600k without the inclusion of any additional targets for special projects. The proposals are varied, interesting and individually tailored to the requirements of every Trust or Foundation to which we apply. Working in close liaison with the Proposal Writer, who is solely focussed on working up applications, this role is centred on the bigger picture of achieving the target, reporting on activity that has taken place, identifying new funding opportunities and looking after key relationships with Trusts and Foundations for the breadth of Aldeburgh Music’s activities. Principal accountabilities Achieving the Trusts and Foundations target annually Specific responsibilities Researching Trusts and Foundations to find available funds suitable for supporting Aldeburgh Music’s activity. Liaising with Heads of Departments to devise appropriate applications that meet the relevant Trusts and Foundations criteria. Working with the Proposal Writer to ensure that high-quality applications, including budgets, are drafted and submitted to meet deadlines. Tracking bids and when successful, ensuring that projects meet grant conditions, including appropriate crediting in all our publications, and that evaluation reports are submitted on time. Managing Trust and Foundation records on our database, Audience View, and ensuring that financial information is accurately maintained both on our database and on budget spreadsheets. 1 Nurturing and developing relationships with key Trust and Foundation contacts, including mailing of our seasonal brochures (four times a year). Keeping an up-to-date schedule of Trust and Foundation activity and reporting to colleagues as necessary on the progress of funding applications. Looking after key Trusts and Foundations contacts when they visit Aldeburgh with particular emphasis on ‘cultivating’ existing / potential supporters – as required. - and any other duties assigned by the Head of External Relations, which might reasonably be deemed to be within the status of the job and appropriate to the post. Person Specification Essential Knowledge and experience of the Trust and Foundation application procedure Some knowledge of classical music would be advantageous, along with awareness of the work of Aldeburgh Music Excellent administrative skills including the ability to prioritise workload Sharp attention to detail A fluent standard of numeracy and computer literacy (Aldeburgh Music uses Microsoft Office on Windows XP/Windows 7 and the ticketing/database system Audience View - full training will be given) High degree of commitment and flexible approach to working hours Ability to communicate effectively at all levels (a high standard of verbal and written English required) Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to gain the confidence and respect of external contacts Ability to work under pressure and to adhere to strict deadlines Happy to work under own initiative and also as part of a wider fundraising team Terms and Conditions This is a full–time appointment to commence from 5th May 2015. There will be a probationary period of six months, after which there will be a formal assessment and assuming that performance has been satisfactory, the appointment will be confirmed. Salary: £26,000 - £28,000 pro rata. Depending on experience. Annual Leave: 25 days per annum. Additionally, the two days, the Monday and Tuesday immediately following the Festival in June, and the days between Christmas and New Year, over and above the public holiday entitlement. If Christmas Eve falls on a working day you will be entitled to that day off in addition to the above. Hours of Work: Normal working hours are from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm Monday to Friday inclusive, including a daily break of up to one hour (minimum 20 minutes) for lunch. In addition, the demands of the job require some evening and weekend work during concert series, for which Aldeburgh Music does not make overtime payments but time off in lieu may be given with agreement with the Head of Department. Place of work: The place of employment will be Aldeburgh Music administrative offices at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape Bridge, Saxmundham, Suffolk and at such other places where Aldeburgh Music carries on its proper business. Elements of this job may be carried out from home. Travel: You will be required to travel throughout the region, often in rural and isolated areas. On these occasions mileage expenses will be reimbursed at the appropriate rate established by Aldeburgh Music for its permanent 2 employees. Car mileage cannot be claimed for journeys between your home and your normal place of employment. If using your own car, it is your responsibility to ensure that the car insurance covers the use of the car for business purposes. Pension: Permanent members of staff will be automatically enrolled into Aldeburgh Music’s non-contributory pension scheme whereby Aldeburgh Music pays 6% of annual salary into a personal pension managed by Standard Life three months after the start of employment at Aldeburgh Music. All employees have the option to opt out or join at an earlier date if desired. Notice Period: One month’s notice in writing on either side during the probationary period rising to three months’ once the appointment is confirmed.
