There are 8 groups, each of which consists of no more than 18 students.
As a reading-based writing course, Introduction to English Composition will
expose students to reading materials on three topics on which students will exchange
their ideas by means of discussion in class.
Students will be required to write four essays throughout the semester. For the
first assignment, students will be marked on two drafts of a partial essay, consisting
of a thesis statement and accompanying body paragraphs. For the remaining
assignments, students will write 4-6 paragraph essays based on the reading packets.
Students will submit two drafts for each essay. Both will be marked. The first draft
will be written in class, while the second draft will be done outside class typed on a
computer. For all of these assignments, students will be required to prepare an
outline prior to writing the first draft. The final assignment will be based on the last
reading packet and written under examination conditions on Monday, September
25, 2006.
Students are also required to keep a journal in which they write responses to
course readings or assigned topics (2 journal entries per essay). These journal
entries should help students develop fluency in writing and generate ideas for
their essays. All of these journal entries will be done as homework assignments.
