Course Outline 14.1 Course Objectives 14.1.1 Learning Objectives 1. To introduce students to basic academic essay writing; 2. To develop students’ skills in writing essays in a variety of forms and on various topics; 3. To develop students’ critical and analytical reading and thinking skills. 14.1.2 Behavioral Objectives 1. Students will write essays of 4-6 paragraphs on various topics, using conventional rhetorical patterns; 2. Students will be better able to analyze academic essays and to identify strengths and weaknesses; 3. Students will develop greater grammatical accuracy in their writing. 14.2 Learning Contents Week 1: Review of paragraph writing, Introduction to essay writing Week 2-4: Narrowing a topic, Writing the thesis statement, Outlining, Writing the introductory and the concluding paragraphs, Rhetorical patterns (cause&effect, compare/contrast) Writing assignment # 1 Week 5-6: More rhetorical patterns, Analysis of model essays Week 7-11: Reading Packet 1(The Media)/Writing assignment # 2 Week 12-14: Reading Packet 2 (Buying up the World)/Writing assignment #3 Week 15-16: Reading Packet 3 (Intellectual Property)/ Final Examination 1 14.3 Method Lecture and discussion of the results of researching or the assigned tasks In-class assignment………………………………… 70 percent 30 percent There are 8 groups, each of which consists of no more than 18 students. As a reading-based writing course, Introduction to English Composition will expose students to reading materials on three topics on which students will exchange their ideas by means of discussion in class. Students will be required to write four essays throughout the semester. For the first assignment, students will be marked on two drafts of a partial essay, consisting of a thesis statement and accompanying body paragraphs. For the remaining assignments, students will write 4-6 paragraph essays based on the reading packets. Students will submit two drafts for each essay. Both will be marked. The first draft will be written in class, while the second draft will be done outside class typed on a computer. For all of these assignments, students will be required to prepare an outline prior to writing the first draft. The final assignment will be based on the last reading packet and written under examination conditions on Monday, September 25, 2006. Students are also required to keep a journal in which they write responses to course readings or assigned topics (2 journal entries per essay). These journal entries should help students develop fluency in writing and generate ideas for their essays.
