Third Essay Assignment
Your assignment is to write a 3-page (700-750 words) essay in which you answer the following
question:
What attributes mark Roland as the ideal medieval knight/hero? What does such
characterization tell us about medieval realities in Europe?
Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind when writing your essay:
1. This is a FORMAL ASSIGNMENT. That means that it should have an introduction (with a
clear thesis statement), a body in which you discuss and prove your thesis, and a conclusion.
2. ANSWER THE QUESTION FROM THE GET-GO!!! Your introduction should posit
your answer. Do not meander about, trying to write some summary of the narrative.
3. USE QUOTATIONS FROM THE BOOK to prove your point. THIS IS REQUIRED!!!
4. Annotate your sources (both The Odyssey and any other sources you might have used)!!! If
you do not, it is plagiarism! If you are unsure of how to annotate, let me know, and I’ll
explain.
5. Keep to the assigned length. Two pages is not enough, four is too long…
