WRITING ASSIGNMENT #3 - My Brother Sam Is Dead
PROMPT
After reading Chapter 11 of My Brother Sam is Dead you know that Timmy is
beginning to question his older brother's values. Tim has remained home with
their mother after both Sam and their father have gone. He is the only one
there to assist his mother in the running of the tavern, which is the family's
legacy and livelihood.
In this writing assignment, pretend you are hard-working Timmy Meeker.
Your objective is to convince Sam that duty to his family comes before duty
to his country.
PRE-WRITING
1. To begin with, list any and all possible arguments you can think of that
you could use to support your stand.
2. Determine your strongest justifiable arguments are, and which are
less substantial.
3. Organize your points from weaker to strongest and jot down anything
you can think of which will support or explain your arguments.
WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT AND FILL IN THE PERSUASIVE ESSAY

DRAFTING
1. Begin with an introductory paragraph in which you express your
frustration, fear, and sorrow about the circumstances affecting you
and your mother's situation.
2. Follow that with one paragraph for each of the main points you have to
support your argument to convince Sam to leave the army after his
present enlistment is expired.
3. Fill in each paragraph with reasons and feelings that support your main
point.
4. Then, write an ending paragraph that summarizes your desperate
desire for him to return home as your final statement.
