You must find outside time (weekends, after school, holidays, free periods) to complete if the time given from English class the 4th quarter does not work out for your SYP. You must have a mentor who is a professional in the field or has appropriate and relevant experience to act as an advisor. Remember how good an internship/project might look to prospective colleges on a resume, application form or included in a recommendation letter. Therefore, consider starting this process earlier in the year. Under the supervision of your mentor, you should be observing, helping and participating in whatever activities comprise that person’s daily activities. Everyone has “Gofer” tasks to accomplish, even your mentors, so be willing to help out with the administrative tasks. However, if the work is more than a few hours, you need to speak to a SYP advisor. All students must complete an Internship/Project or Research Paper Proposal. This must be submitted to your SYP advisor before you begin your project. Before writing the proposal you are required to meet with your SYP advisor to ascertain if it is approved. You will not be given credit for the internship/project until the contract and proposal is in and approved. In other words, don’t start until approved! This will count as one test grade in the 2nd quarter. The grade includes handing in the proposal by January 7, 2009. Each day late will be -5 from the grade. Before starting your project, you must also submit the Senior Project Contract signed by yourself, your parent/guardian, and your mentor and a resume. This is included in the one test grade of the proposal. You should keep a copy of the contract and all other papers pertaining to Senior Year Project together in one folder. You do not need to carry them to school with you unless you have a scheduled appointment with a teacher about the project. Hand in two copies of the proposal to your SYP coordinator. One copy of your proposal will then go to your English teacher for their records and grading. (To be given to English teacher by coordinator.) You are required to meet with a SYP advisor at least once during your process in order to share with them how things are going. This pertains to those who are starting before the 4th quarter. Make an appointment that fits into your schedule. It will not be a long meeting. For those that start the SYP the 4th quarter, an advisor will be meeting with you during the days you will be in your English class. Please feel free to meet with your advisor as many times as you would like. If you are experiencing problems of any kind, please speak with one of us so that we can problem solve together. It is wonderful to also hear when things are going well! Briefly record your activities during any given work session on the time sheet, it will help you remember what to write for your Reflection and Journal questions and Presentation. A Time Log and Evaluation Sheet must be handed in when you are through with your SYP. This will be your proof of having completed the internship/project. This will count as two test grades for the 4th quarter of English. The mentor should be signing the time sheet each time you have done work or gone to the internship. Hours cannot be lumped together at the end with just 15 hours signed off. You must show steady progress in all you are doing, including research paper or creative project and writing. In concurrence with this experiential learning opportunity and as part of the English 12 curriculum, you will complete one of the following: Journal or Presentation-Powerpoint as described by your English teacher. This will count as two test grades for the 4th quarter of English. If you are doing something creative, a Reflective Paper is another choice instead of a journal. The SYP component will count as a major portion of your grades for the 4th quarter of English class. Here is the breakdown of this component: Proposal/contract (including timely submission) -- 1 test-2nd Q Internship/Project (including time sheet and evaluation) 2 tests-4th Q Journal or Presentation or Reflective Paper – 2 tests—4th Q Guidelines for completing the Research paper, Journal or Presentation or Reflective Paper will be given to you by your English teacher. Refer to Grading Procedures, Due Dates and Rubric ditto for information on grading and deductions. Grading Procedures, Due Dates and Rubric The proposal and mentor/parent form is due January 7, 2009. This counts as one test grade to be incorporated into the 2nd quarter of English class. Deductions: -5 points for each day late, for each part late. After more than 20 days late, the proposal and evaluation will be given no credit, but still must be handed in before starting project. No projects or internships are accepted or hours counted unless the proposal and mentor/parent form is signed. No exceptions!!! At times it takes mentors quite a while to get back to us after contacting them about what you will be doing. If you wait until the very end there might be problems with feasibility of doing the experience, safety issues, validity of project, etc. Do not delay in getting in touch with a mentor early in the year. Once approval from us is obtained you will be given a time sheet and evaluation and may start your project. Time management is a big part of the SYP and that includes making the contacts necessary to ensure timing of SYP, transportation details, availability of mentor when you are available to do the SYP. Excuses for not completing on time will be greatly penalized. (See below) Changing mentors and projects is only allowed for extenuating circumstances and will be approved on an individual basis. Changing mentors or your SYP because you did not manage your time or decided to do something else will be penalized. Point deduction will be starting at 20 points off for each of the three test grades and may move to -35 depending on the situation. DUE DATE FOR TIME SHEET AND EVALUTION—2 TEST GRADES: JUNE 1, 2009 NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!! Point deductions will be -10 for each day late. The administration requires us to know who will be graduating early in June. Some students who do not hand in their work will have anywhere from 2 to 4 test grades (2 for time sheet and evaluation; 2 for journal or presentation or reflective paper) counted as 0’s. This will affect the student’s graduation.
