Wedding Toast Checklist No two wedding toasts are the same and the quality of the toast really depends on who is giving it and how they deliver it. _____If you are not known to the majority of guests, start by introducing yourself and how you’re related to the couple. _____Thank whoever is hosting the wedding. _____ Don’t make it about you and your relationship (or lack thereof); stay focused on talking about the newlyweds. _____ Have a funny moment. Maybe include a funny story about the couple. Just make sure it’s appropriate for the situation. _____Have a touching moment (emotional not physical!). Share a special moment you had with the person(s) or a special moment from their life together. _____Don’t mention anything negative like past girlfriends, the cost of the weddings, fights, and so on. _____Stay focused. Don’t talk about too many things. Choose one thing or idea to focus on in your speech. For example, the idea, “I never thought you’d be ready to get married.” _____Be original. Don’t read some chain email or funny meme and think that’s enough. Make it yours! _____End your speech with a toast. _____Wedding toasts should be short! No more than five minutes, minimum of three minutes. _____ You will need to outline this speech. You may write it out complete for practice, but you should never bring a script of your wedding toast to read from. It makes it seem less sincere when you read to the couple. _____Dress appropriately for a wedding. (Bridesmaid dress or tux not required, but make sure you are formally attired)
