BOOK REPORT! BOOK REPORT! BOOK REPORT! (Parent’s Copy) Dear Parent, A book report each nine weeks is required for a nine weeks grade in Reading. Each book report will consist of a summary (format attached) and an assigned project. The summary must follow the guidelines that are presented on the attached sheet and written in the student’s own words. Please check for grammatical errors (sentence structure and misspelled words, etc.). The projects are as follows: ELACC5W9 draw evidence from literary or informational text ELACC5L3 use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening 1st Nine Weeks- A biography is read (a book about a real person). Choose one: Option 1- A puppet is made to represent the famous person in the book. You may use 2 liter bottles, sticks, oatmeal cylinder containers, socks, etc. Option 2- A mask is made to represent the famous person in the book. Please make mask yourself. Be creative. DUE DATE October 3, 2012 2nd Nine Weeks- A fiction book is read. Choose one: Option 1- A diorama is constructed using a small shoe box. The diorama shows the reader’s favorite scene from the book. On an index card tell why it is your favorite scene (this is not the written book report). Glue the index card on top of the shoe box. Option 2- A mobile is made using coat hangers or paper plates, string, etc. depicting characters, main setting, and scenes from the book that depicts the plot and solution of the story. Pictures and words are helpful in the project. DUE DATE December 5, 2012 3RD Nine Weeks- A nonfiction book is read (books about an animal, state, plant, any Science or Social studies topic). Choose one: Option 1- An illustrated ABC book is written about the book (you may use the computer to make booklets and get pictures). Include words and pictures. Option 2- A poster is made to advertise the book read. Create a slogan that can be used in a commercial. Illustrate ideas in the book(e.g. animal’s habitat, state flower, state bird, plants habitat, what plant is used for, etc.). DUE DATE February 27, 2012 4th Nine Weeks- A myth, legend, or fairy tale is read. Choose One: Option 1- Cover a cereal box with paper or spray paint it. Design the front panel of the box: with a creative name for your new cereal, the book’s title, author, and a picture; the left side panel list ingredients of the book: setting, main character, plot, climax and solution; on the right side panel write a notable quote or theme from the book; on the back panel create a game that includes important facts about the character or book. Your game should teach the player about the book. Optional put a toy prize in the box the represents some aspect of the book. Option 2- Create a power point of the book to make a short movie. The powerpoint must contain the beginning, middle and ending of the book. Therefore pictures must represent the book and captions (sentences) are written in the student’s own words. If extenuating circumstances arises, the teacher will decide upon any extensions. Please do not wait until the last minute. There is more than enough time to complete reports and projects. Parents are encouraged to monitor projects and offer suggestions when needed. Book reports are designed to be fun as well as educational.
