Author: Laura Turton Author contact: lturton@henry.k12.va.us Curriculum Area: Science and writing Grade Level: 4th Time Required: 45 minutes Instructional Groupings: Interest Standards: Science 4.4 The student will investigate and understand basic plant anatomy and life processes LA 4.7 The student will write effective narratives and explanations LA 4.8 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure Materials: textbook, trade books, RAFT, paper, pencil, anchor skill sheet As a result of this lesson the student should… Know: Basic plant parts and their functions How to write clearly for information purposes Understand: Most green plants have the same basic structures that perform the same basic functions as other green plants Writing is a major form of communication Do: Demonstrate knowledge of plant parts and their functions Write effectively and edit writing Pre-assessment: A writing pre-assessment of the teacher’s choice should be given to determine if any students need scaffolding for the writing part of this activity. Procedure: This is a closing activity for the end of the plant life processes unit. After a brief review of plant structures and functions the students will complete the following RAFT picking a plant structure of their choice to write about their functions. RAFT What’s My Job? Closure: The students will get into groups (one from each plant part) and share with the rest of their group their plant part and its function. If this is completed correctly then all students will have been reviewed on all plant parts and their functions in preparation for test.
