Virtual Career Mentoring in Education Marking Period 3 Assignment #1: Multiple Intelligence Assignment There are many different personality types, and your personality may play a part in how successful you are in your career. Some companies even hire personality profilers to help make decisions about who to hire. The profilers are able to help predict who is more likely to stay in a job for a longer period because it is more suited to their personality. Spend some time thinking about this. For example, someone who loves science, but does not have a social personality would do much better in research (where there is less human interactions on a day to day basis) than being a doctor (where you must deal with all types of people on a regular basis). The teaching profession is much the same way. Some personality traits make a person very well suited to be a teacher, whereas other traits do not lend themselves as well to the day to day duties of a teacher. Many researchers have studied different personality traits and how they relate to different learning styles and the thought process that each individual uses when learning. This is commonly referred to as multiple intelligences. Howard Gardner is a developmental psychologist who is based at Harvard University. He is the one that has developed the idea of multiple intelligences. According to Gardner, there are nine different intelligences that all humans possess, but that each person has different strengths and weaknesses in those areas. For this assignment you will complete 3 parts. First, you will do some research on multiple intelligences. Second, you will take an online test to find out (theoretically) what your strengths and weaknesses are. Third, you will write a summary about what you have found. The details of this assignment are detailed in the next several pages. Once again, when this assignment is completed it should be handed in to Mrs. Ashbrook or Mrs. LaVigne. Assignment Due Date: Friday, February 24th, 2012. 1 Please Label each part of the assignment as “Part 1”, “Part 2” and “Part 3”. Thank you. Part 1: Research (40 points) For Part 1 of the assignment you need to find information on the nine multiple intelligences that Howard Gardner named as being part of human intelligence. For each of the nine intelligences you should: (a) define the intelligence, (b) describe the characteristics and strengths for that type of intelligence, (c) list 3-4 careers that fit well with people that are strong in the particular intelligence area, and (d) list 2-3 famous people that are considered to have been “strong” in the intelligence area. This assignment should be completed in your own words (no copying and pasting). Do not use words that you cannot define. Also, it should be typed, with a 12 font and 1 inch margins. At the end of this assignment you should list the web sites and/or books/resources that you used to obtain your information. For more information on how the 40 points will be distributed, please see the rubric on page 4. Part 2: Online Test (20 points) For the second part of the assignment you are going to take two online quizzes to assess your intelligence strengths and weaknesses. The web sites for the 2 quizzes are listed below: 1. .http://literacyworks.org/mi/assessment/findyourstrengths.html 2. http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/index.htm At the completion of each quiz you need to print your results (you will be handing these in with the assignment). Attach a page that lists your top strength for each test, as well as your biggest weaknesses, including a short paragraph for each, stating whether you agree with the results or not. For more information on how the 20 points will be distributed please see the rubric on page 5. 2 Part 3: Summary (40 points) As a summary to the assignment and test results you are going to write a short essay. Based on the background information on page one of this assignment, the research that you completed on the nine multiple intelligences, and the results of your quiz please describe how you believe your strengths and weaknesses would affect you in your respective mentoring profession. This should include details as to how your strengths would be good for the profession and how they may hinder you. Also make note of how your weakest areas of intelligence may help or hinder you in the respective profession. The information required of you would fill into a 5 or 6 paragraph essay format quite nicely. For example, the six parts would be: introduction, 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The body paragraphs could be broken down several different ways; for example, there could be 2 paragraphs about how your strengths would help you (1 paragraph), hinder you (2nd paragraph), and then you could discuss your weaknesses as to how they may help or hinder you in either one or two paragraphs. The essay should be types in a 12 font, double spaced, with 1 inch margins. To effectively address each topic the essay should not be any shorter than 1.5 pages. For more information on how the 20 points will be distributed, please see the grading rubric on page 6. This should be emailed or turned in to Mrs. Ashbrook (lashbrook@manistique.k12.mi.us) or Mrs. LaVigne (mlavigne@manistique.k12.mi.us) by the due date (February 25th). For more details on how this assignment will be graded, please see the grading rubrics on page 4 and 5. 3 Virtual Career Mentoring in Education Multiple Intelligence Assignment Rubric: Part 1 Area Grammar (Spelling, punctuation, word use, etc.) Part A (Define each of the nine intelligences using everyday vocabulary. 1 point each) Part B (list appropriate strengths and characteristics of each intelligence 1 point each) Part C (List 3 -4 careers that for each intelligence, 1 point each) Part D (List 2-3 famous people that are considered being strong for each intelligence, 1 point each) Notes Score Possibilities No mistakes 1 mistake 2-3 mistakes 4-5 mistakes more than 5 4 3 2 1 0 All 9 defined well Only 7-8 defined well Only 5-6 defined well Only 3-4 defined well Only 1-2 defined well 9 7-8 5- 6 3-4 1-2 All 9 defined well Only 7-8 defined well Only 5-6 defined well Only 3-4 defined well Only 1-2 defined well 9 All 9 complete 7-8 Only 7-8 complete 5- 6 Only 5-6 complete 3-4 Only 3-4 complete 1-2 Only 1-2 complete 9 7-8 5- 6 3-4 1-2 All 9 complete Only 7-8 complete Only 5-6 complete Only 3-4 complete Only 1-2 complete 9 7-8 5- 6 3-4 1-2 Total Points _________________/40 4 Virtual Career Mentoring in Education Multiple Intelligence Assignment Rubric: Part 2 Area Test Results #1 Have printed out test results from first online quiz.
