P204 The New Interpreters’ Bible a commentary in 12 volumes. 1994 “daily” is the traditional translation of the unusual word epiousios, whose meaning is unknown since it occurs nowhere else in Greek literature independent of this text. Based on etymology and its translation in ancient versions, it can mean “necessary,” “continual”, “for today,” or for tomorrow. The best linguistice evidence points toward “for tomorrow’, which was also the Aramaic text of the gospel of the Nazarenes. But asking today for tomorrows bread seems to conflict with 6:31, 4, yet what is forbidden there is not prayer for tomorrow’s needs, but anxiety about them. The day labour who lived from one day to the next could pray today for bread for tomorrow especially in evening prayer without being guity of greed or wanting to store up reserves. Jerome Commentary “the word epiousios, traditionally translated “daily” is of uncertain meaningl it does not appear in any greek literature before the gospels and the etymology is uncertain. “daily” is a very probable rendering; the word seems to designate the bread of the coming day, and the petition is thus related to the sayins agains excessive solicitude. Howe ver K. Stendahl has raised the question whether the petition may not refer to the messianic banquet . this is also is in harmony with 6:31, for the petition is then not directed even to the simple provision of daily basic needs, btu to the ultimate realization of the reign in which basic daily needs cease to exist. Oxford Bible “Daily bread, basic needs; if the meaning is bread for tomorrow, it may refer to the eschatological banquet.
