La rosa enflorese
Bulgarian Sephardic, Ladino
Version 1:
La rosa enflorese
o en el mes de mai
Y mi alma s’escurese, firiendose el lunar
Y mi alma s’escurese, firiendose el amor
Los bilbilicos cantan
con suspiros d’amor
Mi alma y mi
ventura estan en tu poder
Mas presto ven paloma
Mas presto ven con mi
Mas presto tu mi alma
Que yo me vo morir
“The rose blooms in the month of May. My soul
darkens as the moon is obscured, darkening from
love. The nightingales sing with sighs of love. My
soul and my fate are in your power. Come quickly,
dove, come quickly to me, for I may die.”
Version 2:
Los bilbilicos cantan
Con sospiros de amor
Mi neshama mi ventura
Estan en tu poder
La rosa enflorese
En el mes de mai
Mi neshama s'escurese,
Sufriendo del amor
Mas presto ven palomba
Mas presto ven con mi
Mas presto ven querida,
Corre y salvame

IF THE DOORS ARE LOCKED
The following translation appears on the
50 Gates of Wisdom album, by Keren Barak:
If there be no mercy left in the world,
The doors of heaven will never be barred.
The Creator reigns supreme, and is higher
than the angels
All, in His spirit, will rise
By His nearness, His life-giving breath
flows through them.
And they glory in His name
From the moment of genesis,
His creations grow,
Captivating and more beautiful.
The wheel in his circle thunders
Acclaiming His Holy name
Clothed in the glory of His radiance,
The six-winged cherubs surround Him,
Whirling in His honor
And with their free wings sweetly sing,
Together, in unison
Jaljal wa'ofen ru'ashim
Medim sh'mei u'm'gadeshim
Miziv k'veido loveshim
Uv'shesh kanufayim se'vivim

In te, Domine, speravi
Sefaredi Ladino
In te, Domine, speravi
Per trovar pieta in eterno.
Ma in un tristo e oscuro inferno
Fui e frustra laboravi.
In te, Domine, speravi,
In te, Domine
Rotto e al vento ogni spercança,
Vegio il ciel voltami in pianto,
Suspir lacrime me avansa
Del mío Trieste sperar tanto.
Fui ferito, se no quanto
Tribulando ad te clamavi:
In te, Domine, speravi

In you, God, I have hoped
To find eternal pity.
I found myself in a sad and dark inferno
And I was laboring in vain.
In you, God, do I hope
In you, God
Broken and all hope thrown to the wind
I see the sky will bring me to tears.
Only sighs and tears are left to me
From so much sad waiting.
I was wounded, I know how much
In tribulation I call to you.
In you, god, I put my hope

Refrain: El nora alila, El nora alila,
Ha-m'tzi lanu m'chilah, bi-sh'at ha-ne'ilah.
El Norah, Alilah
Traditional, before repetition of Amidah at
Ne’ilah service
("God who does wondrous deeds"). Opening words
and title of a liturgical hymn (piyyut), composed by
Moses Ibn Ezra, which both Sephardim and
Yemenite Jews recite before the Concluding
(Ne'Ilah) Service on the Day of Atonement. It
comprises eight stanzas, the initial Hebrew letters of
which are an acronym of the author's name; the first
stanza's fourth line is repeated throughout as a
refrain. The text of this beautiful hymn conveys the
worshiper's penitent trust in God "as the closing
hour approaches," and the much-loved traditional
melody sung by the entire congregation breathes a
spirit of hope and optimism. Thanks to its emotive
words and music, El Nora Alilah has recently been
incorporated in the ritual of some Western
Ashkenazi (Conservative) congregations for the
Day of Atonement.

Lyrics Sheet
Because I guard the Sabbath, G-d guards me. It is a
sign for eternity between Him and me.
It is forbidden to seek to do regular things,
Discussing only of what is nessicary,
not words of business, not even words of politics.
I study the Torah, and G-d makes me wise.
Because I guard the Sabbath, G-d guards me. It is a
sign for eternity between Him and me.
On [Shabbat], I always find myself and my soul,
Behold, for the first generation he gave it's holiness
From the miraculous giving of bread, the double
loaves, on Friday
Thus on every Friday he doubles my portion.
Because I guard the Sabbath, G-d guards me. It is a
sign for eternity between Him and me.
It is written in G-d's Torah, a portion to his priests
For the table, the show bread is on it for him,
Therefore, to make a fast on [Shabbat] is forbidden
in accordance with his sages.
Only on the day of atonement do I fast.
Because I guard the Sabbath, G-d guards me. It is a
sign for eternity between Him and me.
It is a day of honor, it is a day of pleasure,
Good bread and good wine, Meat and Fish,
Mourners who are made to grieve on [Shabbat],
cease
Because it is a day of joy, and I am made joyful.
Because I guard the Sabbath, G-d guards me. It is a
sign for eternity between Him and me.
He who labors on [Shabbat], destroy him to his end.
Therefore I wash my heart like the covenant,
And I pray to G-d, Night and Morning,
The Additional prayer and also in the Afternoon, he
answers me.

Las Ventas Altas
(The High Windows)
Ventanas altas tienes tu
con velas amarillas,
Esta noche, arogo al Dio
que me subas arriba.
Tirilaila hop, tirilaila hopa.
El anillo que llevas tú
el diamante es mío,
El kuyungi que te lo dio
es primo 'rmano mío.
You have high windows
with yellow curtains
This night, God willing,
I'll be coming up.
This ring you are wearing its diamond is mine,
The goldsmith who made it
is my cousin.
Tirilaila hop, tirilaila hopa.
Tonight I placed myself
in your neighborhood
Leave your door open
and the candle extinguished.
Esta noche yo me armí
por vuestro vecindado,
Dejarme la puerta abierta
y el candil amatado.
Good night, Hanum Dudun,
Good night, my soul,
My feet are in the snow

Ya Salió del Mar
Ya salió del mar la galana
ya salió del mar.
La novia se viste de amarillo,
ya se fue con su marido.
La novia se viste de colorado
ya se fue con su velado*.
Ya salió del mar ...
Entre el año y salga el mes
como esta novia, blanca es.
Entre el mes y salga el día,
como esta novia, vendrá parida.
Ya salió del mar ...
Esta palomita de buen linaje:
¿Cómo vos la diera su señor padre?
¿Cómo vos la dieran los sus hermanos?
Andando y añidiendo en los ducados.

Now the graceful maiden gets out of the sea
She comes out of the sea.
The bride wears a yellow dress
She goes to her husband.
The bride wears a red dress
She goes to her groom.
She comes out of the sea …
Between a year and a month.
Our bride, how white she is
Between a month and a day,
Our bride, she will bear a child.
She comes out of the sea …
A little pigeon from a good family
How is your father?
How are your brothers?
Walking between the ducats.
She comes out of the sea …
Ya salió del mar ...
Now the graceful maiden gets out of the sea
With a dress, In white and pink.
She comes out of the sea …
Ya salió de la mar la galana
con un vestido
al* y blanco
Ya salió de la mar.
Between the sea and the river
There grows a quince tree.
She comes out of the sea …
Entre la mar y el rio,
mos creció un arbol de bimbrillo*.
Ya salió de la mar.
Between the sea and the sand
There grows a cinnamon tree.
She comes out of the sea
Entre la mar y la arena,
mos creció un arbol de canela.
Ya salió de la mar.
NHI 2010
This sung reflects the custom that the bride is guided to the
pre-nuptial ritual bath in a 'miqwe', where she is submerged,
bathed, and dresses in a ceremony. The woman of the family
accompany her, and the mothers of the bride and the groom
are honored. Obviously only women participate this part that
is celebrated with meals, sweets and songs like this one. - The
song may be sung also at other occasions of the seven-day
wedding celebrations.
The 'canela' and the 'bimbrillo' reflect sexual symbols.

There in the desert I saw burning
I saw the Tablets of the Law being brought down.
And see, the man is Moses our teacher
Who went up and came down from the Heavens

The angels of Heaven want to burn him.
Born of woman, why does he seek holiness?
And see, the man is Moses our teacher
Who went up and came down from the Heavens

Tzur Mishelo
The Rock from whose bounty we have eaten, my friends, let us bless,
We are sated and have enjoyed abundance, according to the word of
God.
Tzur mishelo achalnu bar’chu emunai,

The one who nourishes our world, the shepherd of our ancestors,
We ate of God’s bread and drank of God’s wine.
Therefore let us bless God and sing praises,
We have proclaimed and repeated, there is none holy as God.

In song with grateful voices we bless our God,
For the delightful land bestowed upon our ancestors.
Food and sustenance is provided for our souls,
God’s kindness has overcome us, God is truth.
With kindness, be merciful to Your nation, Our Rock,
And to Zion Your holy dwelling place, location of Your glory.
The son of David Your servant will come and redeem us,
The spirit of our being, anointed of God.

God will proclaim freedom for man and woman,
And will protect you like the pupil of God’s eye.
Your names will be unceasingly pleasant,
Pause and rest on the Shabbat day.
Seek my holy place and my sanctuary,
And make for me a sign of salvation.
Plant a branch in my vineyard,
Heed the call of my nation.
Work the wine-press in Batzrah,
As well as Babylon the mighty city.
Crush my oppressors with wrath,
Hear my voice the day I call.
God, give on the desert mountain
Myrtle, cypress, fir, and pine,
And for the careful and those who are warned,
Give them peace flowing like a river.
Crush my enemies, jealous God,
With melting heart and grief,
And we will open our mouths and fill them,
With joyous song for You.
Teach wisdom to your soul,
And let it be a crown upon your head.
Keep your holy commandments,
Observe your holy Shabbat.

Quando el Rey Nimrod
When King Nimrod (translation)
Quando el Rey Nimrod al campo salía
mirava en el cielo y en la estrellería
vido una luz santa en la Judería
que havía de nascer Abraham Avinu.
When King Nimrod was going out to the fields
He was looking at heaven and at the stars
He saw a holy light in the Jewish quarter
[A sign] that Abraham, our father, must have been
born.
Abraham Avinu, Padre querido
Padre bendicho, luz de Yisrael.
Abraham Avinu [our Father], dear father
Blessed Father, light of Israel.
Then he was telling all the midwives
That every pregnant woman
Who did not give birth at once was going to be
killed
because Abraham our father was going to born.
Luego a las comadres encomendava
que toda mujer que preñada quedasse
si no pariera al punto, la matasse
que havía de nascer Abraham Avinu.
Terach's wife was pregnant
and each day he would ask her
Why do you look so distraught?
She already knew very well what she had.
La mujer de Terach quedó preñada
y de día en día le preguntava
¿De qué teneix la cara tan demudada?
ella ya sabía el bien qué tenía.
After nine months she wanted to give birth
She was walking through the fields and vineyards
Such would not even reach her husband
She found a manger; there, she would give birth.
En fin de nueve meses parir quería
iva caminando por campos y viñas,
a su marido tal ni le descubría
topó una meara, allí lo pariría
In that hour the newborn was speaking
'Get away from the manger, my mother
I will somebody to take me out
He will send from Heaven the one that accompany
me
Because I am a servant of the Blessed God.'
En aquella hora el nascido fablava
"Andávos mi madre, de la meara
yo ya topo quen me alexasse
mandará del cielo ken me acompañará
porque só criado de El Dio Barukh."
Saludemos agora al compadre y tambien al
mohel
que por su Zehut nos venga
el Goel y Rihma a todo Israel,
cierto loaremos al Verdadero.

Come my Beloved to greet the bride
The Sabbath presence let us welcome!
'Safegaurd' and 'Remember' both uttered as one
The One and Only God made us hear
Hashem is one and His Name is one
for renown, for splendor and for praise
To welcome the Sabbath come let us go
for it is the source of blessing
from the beginning from antiquity
she was honored last in deed but first in thought
O Sanctuary of the King royal city
Arise and depart from amid the upheaval
too long have you dwelled in the valley of weeping
He will shower compassion upon you
Shake off the dust arise! Don your splendid clothes
My people through the son of Jesse the
Bethlehemite!
Drew near to my soul redeem it!
Wake up! Wake up! For your light has come rise up
and shine
Awaken, awaken, utter a song
The glory of Hashem is revealed on you
Feel not ashamed be not humiliated
Why are you downcast? Why are you disconsolate?
In you will My people's afflicted find shelter
As the City is built upon its hilltop
