Romeo and Juliet Final Project: Your final project for Romeo and Juliet will be grouped into two parts: one
writing assignment and one creative assignment. You will have a choice for both of these elements of the
project.
Choose 1 assignment from the writing options and one from the alternative assessment options.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT DUE MARCH 2, 2013.
1. Essay Writing Assignments Options: (chose 1 from A or B to complete this
portion of the project)
A. Essay Requirements: will be graded on standard essay rubric
 1-2 pages, typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font
 You may answer any of the following essay topics in a clear, well-written essay form with an
introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
 Your essay will be graded for content and conventions (grammar and spelling).
Essay Choices
1. Compare and contrast any two scenes from the two versions of the film.. Describe what you see in each.
What are the differences? What are the similarities? Discuss at least 3 of the following: choice of text, use of
music, camera angles and filming, image of the characters or setting. The scenes are available for viewing on
YouTube, Netflix, or redbox.
2. In the prologue, Shakespeare calls Romeo and Juliet “star-crossed lovers,” meaning that their destiny is
controlled by fate, or the stars. Explain how this idea is developed throughout the play.
3. Compare and contrast the characters in another story to Romeo and Juliet. For example, you could use Bella
and Edward from the Twilight series, Jack and Rose from Titantic, Pyramus and Thisbe, Catniss and Peta OR
Catniss and Gale from the Hunger Games Series, Hester and Arthur from The Scarlet Letter, ect. You can also
think outside the box and use a different set of characters.
B. Creative Writing Requirements: Each choice has an individual rubric.
 Must be typed, double-spaced where applicable
 No less than one page where applicable
Choices
1. Write 3 sonnets that portray the themes of Romeo and Juliet. Must be 14 lines each and have a set
Shakespearean ryhme scheme.
2. Create the front page of a newspaper "The Verona Voice" Report on some of the events of the play. This
must be formatted like a newspaper. Newspaper should include headlines, articles, and graphics.
ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT DUE MARCH 5, 2013.
These creative assessments will be graded on effort, creativity, and completion. Your final product must
reflect that you have put forth the appropriate time and effort to earn the full 100 points. For example,
do not hand in an artistic interpretation of something drawn on computer paper with pencil. You will not
get credit.
Choices: will be graded via individual assignment rubric.
1. Dramatic Interpretation (may be done in groups of 2-3 or solo): Stage a scene from Romeo and Juliet. You
will act out the performance live for the class or film it and play it for the class. You must use props and
costumes! You may not read your lines from a script. Each person must speak 15 lines from memory or more. If
you are acting with a group then each person is responsible for their 15 lines (group will be same grade). If you
are reciting a solo performance, find a monologue or soliloquy of at least 15 lines.
2. Soundtrack- create a soundtrack for Romeo and Juliet. Create a CD or collect songs on a flash drive that
reflect the mood/tone of each significant scene. (Minimum of 10 songs for entire play). Create a playlist that
tells the song title and explain WHY this was chosen for a specific scene.
3. Digital Storytelling- Create a photo story for Romeo and Juliet. This is a slide show set to music and audio.
The pictures combined with the music should tell the story without additional explanation or words from
presenter. (10-15 slides). Present to the class.
4. Graphic Storyboard- Create a graphic storyboard for Romeo and Juliet. This must include at least 5
drawings with captions. Present to the class and explain.
5. Artistic Interpretation- Choose a few lines from the play that are meaningful to you. Draw or paint a picture
that conveys the meaning of those lines. Write a written explanation of your artwork and present to the class.
Use color.
6. Character Scrapbook- Create a scrapbook with a page each main character. Each page should be a
representation of the character and what they value/ stand for. You may add pictures of what you think the
character should look like. Romeo and Juliet should have a page each and a page together. (Minimum 10
pages).
7. Statue: A statue of Juliet is mentioned at the end of the play. Using modeling clay or other materials, create
this statue. Design/build it and explain your art piece. Write why you chose to create the statue you created.
8. Mobile: Create a Romeo and Juliet Mobile. Hang pictures and items that are representative of the characters,
the plot, the themes, ect from the play. Hang a minimum of 15-20 items from your mobile and present to the
class. Explain the significance of each item chosen.
