Directions: As a group outline and answer the following question.
In the mid 1700s, life in England began to change rapidly and dramatically as the Industrial Revolution began.
Your essay should include an introduction, three paragraphs highlighting the main ideas and a conclusion.
Remember to use transitions from one paragraph to the next, linking the information together. In a well
organized essay (at least five paragraphs) discuss the following topics:
a. Describe two reasons why Industrialization began in England. (can be included in introduction)
b. Describe at least one way that life changed for people living during this period, comparing what life was like
before the Industrial Revolution to what it afterward became. (2nd paragraph)
c. Identify two hazardous working conditions of factories and provide an explanation for each. (3rd paragraph)
d. Last define capitalism and socialism. Relate each to the Industrial Revolution. (4th paragraph)
e. Explain at least two positive ways life changed due to the Industrial Revolution. (More info can be found on
page 292) (can be included in the conclusion)

both reasons allowed the changes to occur. The student identifies one way that life was altered by these
changes, comparing life before the industrial revolution to life after. The student identifies and explains two
examples of working conditions in factories. The student provides an accurate definition of capitalism and
socials and relates both economic systems to the Industrial Revolution. The student has zero grammatical errors
and provides answers in proper paragraph and sentence form.
3 – The student identifies 2 reasons and shows some understanding of how these reasons led to the changes of
the revolution. The student identifies one way life was altered by the industrial revolution and compares it to
life before. The student shows some understanding of working conditions during the Industrial Revolution. The
student provides some understanding of capitalism and socialism.
2 – The student identifies at least one reason but does not explain how it led to the changes of the industrial
revolution. The student vaguely identifies how life was changed by the industrial revolution. The student
identifies at least one working condition of factories but does not explain the hazard. The student does not
provide an accurate definition of capitalism or socialism and does not relate it to the Industrial Revolution.
