Introduction
Have you ever wondered what would have happened if George Washington asked you to
make the American flag instead of Betsy Ross? If this were to happen what would you put on
your flag? What materials would you use? For the next few class periods in History, you will be
making your own individual American Flag. On April 23, you will have to get up in front of the
class and present your flag for no longer than five minutes. Do not worry, for you are able to do
great! I am looking forward to see what you will come up with. This project will be done in
class, and all the materials will be provided for you. I hope you enjoy this and learn why the
American Flag is so important to the United States of America!
Task
Fourth- and fifth-grade students are recruited to create and design a flag for the United
States of America. They are expected to browse the websites provided by clicking on the pictures
and underlined links. Their research will focus on colors, symbols, and their meanings or
significance. Students are encouraged to use various paper materials and their own creative
abilities to form their flags.
In addition, students will prepare individual oral presentations. The presentation should
be delivered in no longer than five minutes. The subject will be about the symbols and colors that
the students have used. Students will also share three reasons why they made their flags the way
they did. Students will bring their finished work, deliver their presentations, and submit their
written reports on Thursday, April 23, 2009.
Please use the following format for your written report:
Name
Class
Teacher
Date
Things to include on your written report
For this first paragraph, write about the colors you used. Explain what each color means,
or tell what it stands for. In addition, write about the symbols you used. For example, if you used
stars, what do they stand for? Explain what the symbols in your flag mean.
For this paragraph, provide three points explaining why you designed your flag the way
you did. Please remember to write in complete sentences.
Process
Step 1:
Each student will work individually and brainstorm how to make a new flag for
the United States of America, as if we never had one.
Step 2:
Research and pick out what colors you want your flag to be made of. Make sure
you pick colors that represent what you think the United States of America
stands for. (You can click on the colored pictures below to get there!)
Step 3:
Research and pick out what symbols you want on your flag. Be careful to pick
out symbols that show the values that represent what we believe in America.
Step 4:
The flag will be made on a poster board (size 22X28) with any crafts and
materials available in the classroom.
Step 5:
Present your flag to the class in an oral report that will last about five minutes on
April 23, 2009. Be prepared to explain why you picked your colors and symbols
to represent your flag for the United States of America.
Step 6:
Turn in your report to the teacher after giving your oral presentation.

Conclusion
Our American Flag is a symbol of our freedom because of all the work our ancestors did
when they had come into this country long ago. Everyone remembers the stories of Pearl Harbor
and 9/11. During these days, even after all the devastation and disaster, the American people are
still able to wave their flag and take pride in being Americans. In conclusion to this project, you
should have a better understanding of why the American Flag is so important to the American
people. You should have gained respect not only for our flag, but also for the men and women
who have given their lives and have fought for our freedom.
