Creative Writing Syllabus Dear Students, I look forward to learning more about each and every one of you. The following is a short syllabus re: the various types of writing we will accomplish over the course of this semester. Two portfolio pieces will be completed in this class: the personal narrative (true story) and the personal expressive (fictional story). I base many of my lessons around books written by Julia Cameron such as The Artist’s Way and The Vein of Gold. These books are used to teach Creative Writing at UCLA. There is no text book for the course at this time. We will read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. This book is at Barnes & Noble or you may check it out from the library. There will be study questions and various writing activities based on this novel. You will need a Mead composition book for this class for journaling in addition to your regular notebook. The journal/composition book will be taken up periodically for a test grade. Please purchase this composition book ASAP. Although this is a Creative Writing class, we will be completing pieces that meet the criteria for the Senior Writing portfolio which is required for graduation. We will talk about, read, learn, and create the following types of writing: Morning Pages: Stream of Consciousness style writing Personal Narrative – true stories about yourself Personal Expressive - short stories that are fictional Poetry Vignette writing Reflective writing One powerpoint will also be made by you and presented in class: Favorite book! Favorite author! There are tests in this class. We will study literary devices such as simile, metaphor, personification, etc. There is a midterm and a final exam in this class. I expect you to follow all GHS rules and I expect you to be in your assigned seat when the bell rings. I am a writer myself. I have written four novels. I am actively searching for a literary agent and hope to be a published author one day! I am also a singer/songwriter. I am a music publisher and am affiliated with BMI in Nashville.
