A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course consists of a seminar-style critical examination of the apologetics of contemporary
evangelical Christian philosopher William Lane Craig. The course will focus on Craig’s university
campus work, especially his public debates with leading critics of Christianity. Topics will include the
nature and limits of apologetics, religious epistemology, arguments for and against the existence of God,
arguments for and against the resurrection of Jesus, the relationship between ethics and God, the
relationship between science and God, plus Craig’s “ultimate apologetic” (love).
B. COURSE OBJECTIVES
Through this course the student will gain a deeper understanding of the following:






the apologetics of evangelical Christian philosopher William Lane Craig
the history, methods, and issues of apologetics and philosophy of religion
the relationship between faith and reason
the art of philosophical analysis and critique, especially with regard to issues concerning the grounds
of religious belief
the need for intellectual humility in our search for, and understanding of, religious truth
the thesis that intellectual humility coupled with good reasoning and faith need not preclude
knowledge or reasonable belief concerning some important religious/metaphysical truths central to
Christianity

This course may satisfy 3 credit hours of Providence UC's general undergraduate requirements as an
Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies course or as a Humanities elective. Also, this course is available as a graduatelevel course on request (advisor approval required). It is the student’s responsibility to retain this course syllabus for

D. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Attendance and participation. This is a seminar-style course, so students must attend class to
participate in class discussion and (sometimes, as assigned) lead those class discussions. Also,
attendance is required to view the lectures and debates that will constitute the topics of our class
discussions. (See Course Policies below regarding attendance, lateness, and inappropriate behaviour.)
2. Readings. Students will read all of Craig’s Reasonable Faith and all of Craig’s On Guard.
3. Study Guides. Students will provide written answers to the study guide questions for both main
textbooks: i.e., Reasonable Faith Study Guide (all chapters except chapter 8; skip #9 of chapter 1)
plus assigned portions of On Guard Study Guide (i.e., Morals chapter 6, Evil chapter 7, Jesus'
resurrection chapter 8, Pluralism chapter 10; skip chapter 10's "final wrap-up" questions). Due date:
June 22.
4. Essay. The student will investigate a topic related to Craig’s apologetics which is of particular
interest to the student. Length of essay: 8-10 pages (12-point font, double-spaced, one-inch margins).
Due date: June 22. No late papers will be accepted (except in cases of serious illness, extreme
emergency, or death; see late assignment policy below). Approval of professor must be obtained
before essay writing begins; additional details/expectations are forthcoming.

F. COURSE POLICIES
1. Class Attendance Policy
Attendance is required as well as highly recommended. If absences occur, a 5 percent deduction from the
final course grade will be levied for each hour of missed class time (unless the absence is excused for a
3
good reason such as serious illness, extreme emergency, or death, verified by a reasonable authority such
as a medical doctor; in these cases the student must fill out an Absence Form as well as submit
appropriate documentation). (The Absence Form can be found at the end of the online syllabus.)
Arriving to class late is a seriously frowned upon behaviour. Please be on time!
Inappropriate behaviour while attending class (e.g., talking without instructor’s approval) is unacceptable.
By registering in the class, the student agrees to abide by the following ground rules for discussion:
-
-
Rule 1 – Show your hand when you wish to speak.
Rule 2 – Speak only when asked to speak.
Rule 3 – When you begin to speak state your name clearly.
Rule 4 – One person speaks at a time.
Rule 5 – Be quiet when another person is speaking.
Rule 6 – Feel free to voice disagreement, but do so with gentleness and respect.
Rule 7 – Try to make each other feel comfortable enough to make mistakes: i.e., don’t scoff or laugh
in a put-down sort of way. (Note: Good thinking requires practice, and practice usually involves the
making of mistakes—and the making of mistakes in a class discussion often leads to greater
understanding for everyone.)
Rule 8 – Stop the talking/discussion when your instructor says stop. (Your instructor has material
that has to get covered during the course. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of a discussion or
lecture, then feel free to make an appointment with your professor to continue the discussion.)
2. Information and Communication Technologies in Class
Students are expected to give their total attention to class activities, so student use of information and
communication technologies (ICTs) such as laptop computers for purposes other than class note-taking is
not allowed in the classroom. Use of cell-phones, iPods, etc. is never appropriate in the classroom, nor is
the use of laptop computers to play games, browse the internet, or otherwise engage material not related
to the class.
3. Late Assignment Policy
Late assignments will not be accepted (except in cases of serious illness, extreme emergency, or death,
verified by a reasonable authority such as a medical doctor; in these cases the student must fill out a Late
Assignment Submission Form as well as submit appropriate documentation). (The Late Assignment
Form can be found at the end of the online version of this syllabus.)
4. Plagiarism
Students are expected to demonstrate academic integrity in all its various forms and will be held
accountable for doing so by the policy on Academic Dishonesty in the Student Handbook:
http://www.providenceuc.ca/college/community_life/community_life/. One particularly problematic
breach of academic integrity is plagiarism, which is stealing from the ideas and writings of another person
and passing them off as one’s own. For elaboration of the nature of plagiarism and how to cite sources
properly, see relevant documents on the Providence College website:
http://www.providenceuc.ca/college/library/research/use_a_style_guide_or_create_a_bibliography/

author of another insightful little treatise provocatively titled On Bullshit.)

* Jaki, Stanley L. Means to Message: A Treatise on Truth. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Eerdmans, 1999. (Jaki’s thesis is simple
but deeply profound: any philosophy that is written in a book must account for [1] the fact—the reality—of the book in
which the philosophy is written and [2] the fact—the reality—that the contents of the book, i.e., the author's intended
meanings, can be known by its readers.)

concept of “simple truth” is especially helpful, giving all of us an objective handle on a common reality; see chapter 5.)
McCallum, Dennis, editor. The Death of Truth: What’s Wrong with Multiculturalism, the Rejection of Reason, and the New
Postmodern Diversity. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Bethany House Publishers, 1996. (This is a helpful book dealing with
the excesses of early postmodernist thought. The contributions by Jim Leffel [chapters 3 and 4] and Dennis McCallum
[chapter 14] are very good. The book is also helpful in its various chapters that look at the postmodern impact on
literature, education, history, science, psychotherapy, law, and religion.)
