Dare to be different!
Stargirl Unit Project
Choose ONE of the following tasks:
Task #1: Scrapbook
For this task, you will put yourself in the role of Stargirl Caraway. So far we see her as a free spirit with a
lot of enthusiasm. Because this story begins at the beginning of a school year, you will create a
scrapbook that illustrates the school year in the story. Please include all important events as they
happen in the story. Your scrapbook should be something that Stargirl would create.
Your project will be graded on creativity, quality and content. This is something that should not be done
on loose leaf paper or with stick figure drawings.
Task #2: Hot Seat
Ever wonder what it might be like to be Diane Sawyer, David Letterman, Oprah Winfrey or Kevin
Quinlan? Here is your opportunity to be a talk show host! In this task you will conduct an interview with
someone who you consider to be unique like Stargirl Caraway. Using a video camera, you will conduct a
5 minute interview asking Hot Seat type questions—the interview may not exceed 10 minutes. The
audience (Me) should have a good idea about who your person is. You may want to consider a person
you may have always wanted to know more about, a family member you may find interesting, or even a
high school student that you may look up to. Please stay away from using your friends as this can be a
difficult task that may lose points on your grade. Use those technology class skills!
Some helpful hint: You want an introduction with music, a nice background, a set of questions that you
will ask, a closing statement and credits.
Your project will be graded on seriousness, length, questions asked, and quality. Please submit the video
on a smart drive, CD or DVD. You must submit the questions asked as well.
Task #3: Children’s Version of Stargirl
Do you miss the Bernstein Bears? Miss the rhyming of Dr. Seuss? In this task, you will create a children’s
version of Stargirl. This 15 page, illustrated book will cover all the major points of the story. Remember
to end it with “The End.”
This task will be graded on its accurateness to the story line, as well as grammar, spelling and
punctuation. As always, QUALITY is a must! Be proud that you turned this into a children’s book!
Task #4: Make your own outfit.
In this task, you will create an original outfit. You may use material to create a full outfit, including pants
or shorts and a shirt. DO NOT use other pieces of clothing, this must be original. Your outfit will be
graded on completeness and originality. So whip out those sewing skills and tap into your inner
fashionista and make Stargirl proud that you do not have to follow the standards set by Hollister and
Abercrombie & Fitch.
***PLEASE BE SURE TO STICK TO THE SCHOOL’S DRESSCODE POLICY***
Task #5: Persuasive Essay
As your final assessment in the Stargirl unit, you will write a 5-paragraph persuasive essay that answers
one of the following questions:
 Is conformity ever desirable?
 Do people/students lose their individuality when they choose to follow leaders?
 Does one have to be a non-conformist to be a successful, productive, or creative person?
 Is popularity worth the price of conformity?
 Is individuality worth the price that one may pay?
Guidelines:
You will produce a well-written and thoroughly crafted essay that argues a position. The essay will be
composed of an introduction (which includes a thesis statement), three body paragraphs, and a
conclusion. Also, you must use 6 quotes from the book to defend your thesis.
What you will be graded on:
In addition to the structural requirements, your essay will also be evaluated on spelling, grammar, and
mechanics.
