Station 3: Poetry Passages
Using the same poems we used during the Reading Comprehension Stations, answer the
short response questions that go with each poem.
“Miss Rosie”
1. Find one simile and one metaphor the author uses to describe Miss Rose AND
explain their effects. (What does the reader learn about her as a result of each
figure of speech?)
2. Describe the speaker’s attitude toward Miss Rosie. What inferences can you make
about their relationship and what emotions does the speaker seem to experience?
Be sure to use textual evidence to justify your conclusions.
“The Sonnet-Ballad”
1. Describe what a sonnet MUST have in order to be a sonnet.

1. Discuss your interpretation of the theme of this poem. What do you believe was
the author’s message? Be as specific as possible, and make sure to use textual
evidence to support your interpretation.

1. What is the author’s purpose in writing the poem? Explain what she means by the
final two lines and how it impacts the meaning.
